DETROIT Technology to restore vision through the use of a component of green algae developed by a Wayne State University professor and scientific director of the Ligon Research Center of Vision at the Kresge Eye Institute has attracted additional funding for therapy development.
The Foundation Fighting Blindness announced a $250,000 grant from their affiliate, National Neurovision Research Institute, to RetroSense Therapeutics, LLC, a Michigan-based company. RetroSense signed a license agreement in 2011 for the novel gene-therapy approaches developed at Wayne State University by Zhuo-Hua Pan, Ph.D., professor of ophthalmology and anatomy & cell biology in the School of Medicine.
Pan's novel strategy focused on genetically converting light-insensitive inner retinal neurons into photosensitive cells, thus restoring light sensitivity to retinas that lack photoreceptors. Using a virus that delivers a photoreceptor gene from green algae called channelrhodopsin-2 (ChR2), he found that ChR2 made the inner retinal neurons light sensitive, and that this persisted for long periods in the neurons, ultimately leading to restored responses to light in the brain's visual cortex.
Pan, along with colleagues at Salus University in Pennsylvania, developed the breakthrough therapy and follow-on approaches that offer promise to people suffering with blindness caused by age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and retinitis pigmentosa (RP) retinal degenerative disorders that are currently incurable.
AMD is the leading cause of blindness in people older than 60, affecting more than 8 million in the United States. Worldwide, 500,000 individuals lose their eyesight annually to AMD, which is the result of progressive deterioration of photoreceptor cells in the macula, near the center of the retina.
RP is a genetically-determined eye disease caused by mutations in more than 100 different genes. An estimated 100,000 Americans have RP, which typically manifests as night blindness and progresses to tunnel vision and sometimes complete blindness.
"This field of research, known as optogenetics, is a very promising and creative approach to restoring vision in people with severe vision loss or complete blindness," said Stephen Rose, M.D., the foundation's chief research officer, in a news release. "RetroSense has outstanding technology, and it has achieved impressive results in lab studies. We are pleased to support the company in its effort to move the treatment into a clinical trial."
Rose said an advantage of optogenetic treatments is that because they work independently of genetic defects causing disease, they may work for a variety of retinal degenerations.
The foundation said the therapy developed by Pan has demonstrated restored vision in animal models with highly degenerated retinas. RetroSense Therapeutics is seeking U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval for a Phase I clinical trial.
Sean Ainsworth, founder and chief executive officer of RetroSense, licensed the technology from Wayne State University. He has said that Phase I clinical trials could begin in early 2013.

Let?s look at all the reasons why you may not want to be so quick to leave your job in the rear view mirror:
? You have a career to build. That?s right, it?s about more than just money. All that going to work everyday and doing a good job should lead to something more self-fulfilling: a career. How cool is it to get your name out there and become a distinguished figure in your industry? Maybe you?re not going to be that rock star or athlete you always wanted to be, but you can still be famous.
? You get a steady paycheck. There?s a great comfort in knowing you?re going to get a paycheck every two weeks.? Most people don?t value the stability of such income until it is taken away. Remember that.
? Benefits. Have you ever added up how much health insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, life insurance, disability insurance, educational reimbursement, 401k matching, social security / FICA benefits, and anything else I missed would cost you out of pocket? Depending on how many of these benefits your employer has, they spend A LOT of money on you!
? Practice. Your job gives you the opperutnity to try a lot of different strategies ? some good some bad.? If you do something wrong, is it the end of the world?? Probably not!? Your employer will either barely notice or bounce back.? But if you?re alone, you?ll notice!
? Taxes.?When you get your paycheck, the taxes have already been taken out and you learn to live off of what you take home.? But if you?re making money on your own, you?ll likely have to pay taxes into the IRS at some point.? Unless you?re already planning for this, this will put a serious crimp in your finances.
? School. Why did you bother to go to college if you?re not going to work? Remember when you were young and you wanted to build the next cool thing or solve cancer? If you?ve given up on those dreams, maybe you just need to switch jobs.
? Discipline. Would you really know who you are or what you?re capable of if you weren?t constantly challenged with hard work? If you answer yes, then maybe you have more to learn about yourself than you know.
Above All:
It is often said that truly successful entrepreneurs are not great risk takers; they are great risk reducers. If you?ve got an idea you know will be fool-proof, don?t let me or anyone else stand in your way.
But unless your plan for success has already yielded you a comfortable income for life, can be sustained indefinitely, and covers all the above-mentioned benefits above, I wouldn?t be so quick to give up on employment just yet.
If you?re unhappy with your job, get a new one. A plant needs the right amount of sunlight to grow, and your career is no different. Remember what it is you liked about wanting to become whatever it is you do. You worked hard to become whatever you are today. Don?t take your accomplishments lightly.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Despite a battle over birth-control policy between the White House and Roman Catholic leaders, U.S. Catholics' political views differ little from those of non-Catholic voters, according to Reuters/Ipsos poll results released on Monday.
About four in 10, or 37 percent, of Catholic voters approve of Democratic President Barack Obama's performance, and 48 percent disapprove, according to the online survey of registered voters conducted February 6-13.
The numbers are nearly identical for non-Catholic, with 37 percent approving and 50 percent disapproving, the online poll found.
Twenty-five percent of Catholic voters feel the country is headed in the right direction, and 61 percent believe it is not, the survey said, compared with 24 percent and 63 percent for non-Catholics.
Results for Catholics and non-Catholics also both show a statistical dead heat if Republican Mitt Romney were his party's nominee and the 2012 presidential election were held today, although Catholic voters favor Romney slightly over Obama.
The online poll found that 42 percent of non-Catholic registered voters would back Obama, versus 39 percent for Romney. Among Catholics, 42 percent would pick Obama, but the number was higher - 44 percent - for Romney.
"It certainly suggests that Catholics are a little more Romney-favorable than not," said Chris Jackson, research director for Ipsos Public Affairs.
Obama on Friday made health insurers responsible for providing free birth control to employees of religious groups. The move aimed to placate leaders of the Catholic church who oppose contraception and objected to the initial rule that church institutions be forced to provide such coverage.
The policy ended days of squabbling between the administration, church officials and Republicans in Congress over the rule, which had briefly seemed like it might become a campaign issue in the November presidential election.
Romney and other Republicans vying for the nomination to oppose Obama's re-election bid used the issue to contend that the White House was waging a war on religion.
The Reuters/Ipsos survey found that 42 percent of Catholics disagreed with the idea that religious hospitals or health organizations should be required to provide birth control or contraceptives.
Thirty-three percent of non-Catholics disagreed.
Jackson said the result indicated that, given the issue's sensitivity, Obama had done well to come up with a solution well before the November 6 general election.
"Getting out with a win, or at least a draw, now is a good strategy before it becomes a bigger issue," he said. "His best chances for re-election have always been the economy and focusing on the improvement in the economy."
The precision of the Reuters/Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval, a statistical measure used because the sample of likely voters is selected from pre-screened voter panels.
For the broader poll, non-Catholic registered voters had a credibility interval of plus or minus 2.6 percentage points. The interval was plus or minus 5.2 percentage points for Catholic registered voters.
For the contraception questions asked between February 8 and 13, non-Catholic responses had a credibility interval of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points; Catholic responses had a credibility interval of 6.7 percentage points.
The broader survey interviewed 1,899 non-Catholic registered voters and 484 Catholic registered voters. The contraception questions were asked of 1,136 non-Catholics and 287 Catholics.
LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A federal grand jury has indicted a Romanian citizen on charges he hacked into 25 climate-research computers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena.
Tuesday's indictment charges Robert Butyka, 25, with one count of unauthorized impairment of a protected computer, according to the U.S. attorney's office in Los Angeles.
Officials said the 2010 attack made computers in the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder Program unusable for two months while malicious code was removed and data restored. The program is used in climate research and weather forecasting.
The U.S. attorney's office said NASA worked with Romanian authorities, resulting in Butyka's conviction in Romania last month. He has been sentenced to three years in prison there and would face a sentence of up to 10 years if convicted in the U.S.
JPL spokeswoman Veronica McGregor said it won't disclose how far the hacker got into the system, but he wasn't able to access the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder instrument in space that transmits weather measurements back to Earth.
Damage from the hacking was estimated at $500,000, including costs of work on the computers and lost research time.

Look, if the Academy Awards hate the best song category so much, why don't they just dump it completely?
First, only two songs instead of five were nominated for the best original song Academy Award. That means the group skipped over songs by Mary J. Blige, Elton John, Chris Cornell, and because of a bizarre rule, Madonna. Her song "Masterpiece" from "W.E." won the Golden Globe, but it's not Oscar eligible because it's the second song played in the closing credits, not the first. That sounds kind of like one of those random rules somebody scribbled on the list at the last minute if you ask us.
And now, according to Deadline.com, the two songs that did get nominated won't be performed at the Feb. 26 ceremony.
To some viewers, this is surely a good thing, but?we always like hearing the songs. The little snippets from the various films can only give you a?tiny?idea of whether Brad Pitt is a better actor than George Clooney, or whether the costumes from "Hugo" are better than those in "Jane Eyre." But the song category lays it all on the table. You hear the whole song. You get to make your own judgment.

Mobile video now accounts for half of all mobile traffic; and on some networks, that number is as high as 69 percent -- a testament to the rise of smartphones and tablets as the mobile devices of choice for consumers, and their growing interest in using these devices to do a lot more than just make phone calls. The data, from a new report on mobile data usage by mobile analytics firm Bytemobile, also found that Android is generating more mobile ad volume than iOS devices, and that Google now accounts for 75 percent of ad-generated data across all platforms.
