HTC shuts Seoul office, leaves Korea to the Koreans

Having already pulled out of Brazil and shut down a research building in North Carolina, HTC has now closed its office in the South Korean capital of Seoul. The move is part of the Taiwanese manufacturer's efforts to "streamline operations" and focus on selling One-branded handsets in markets where it stands a better chance of success -- rather like Nokia's geographic retreat following its commitment to Windows Phone, but here on a much smaller scale. It's not yet clear how many jobs will be lost, but HTC says it regrets the "direct impact on people who have contributed to the growth HTC has experienced in the past several years." As it stands, analysts reckon that Korean manufacturers like Samsung, LG and Pantech rule a 90 percent share of their home market, leaving HTC with just one or two points that evidently weren't worth clinging onto.

LONDON (AP) ? NASCAR has suspended driver A.J. Allmendinger indefinitely after a test of his backup urine sample came back positive Tuesday.

Allmendinger originally was suspended July 7 after failing a random drug test taken in late June. His backup "B'' urine sample was tested Tuesday by Aegis Analytical Laboratories in Nashville, Tenn.

NASCAR officials announced the results and subsequent suspension Tuesday night.

Officials did not announce what substance for which Allmendinger tested positive. Allmendinger has said he tested positive for a stimulant he has not revealed, but denied knowingly taking a banned substance.

Earlier Tuesday, NASCAR CEO Brian France said he is confident in the series' drug testing program.

Let's say you want a stylish pair of shoes that is ridiculously overpriced. Passing by the store, you notice a hopeful sign: "Clearance!"

You scavenge for the pair that you like and they're a perfect fit. But they aren't marked down. Having asked to speak to the manager, he comes by with an imperious expression and you wonder aloud why these aren't on sale.

"These never go on sale," he smirks with impatience, chastising you for even asking.

EU proposes Japan free trade talks despite carmarkers? concerns

The European Union?s executive on Wednesday proposed starting free trade talks with Japan - despite protestations from carmakers that a recent trade deal with South Korea was already crippling an ailing industry. ?There are a number of problems that have to be resolved in the car market ? but we have to sort this out independently of free trade agreements?, EU Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht said on Wednesday. A free trade deal with Japan - which has a strong car industry - could boost the EU?s economy by 1 percentage point and create 400,000 new jobs, the commissioner said, predicting that it would take about five years to conclude negotiations.

EU leaders are expected to decide whether to let the commission embark on the exercise at a summit in October. But several European carmakers - struggling with falling sales and large-scale redundancy plans - are questioning whether opening up the EU?s markets to Asian rivals is a good idea.

If You Are Hit By Two Atomic Bombs, Should You Have Kids?

Tsutomu Yamaguchi was late for work. It was August 1945, and he'd just finished designing a 5,000-ton tanker for his company, Mitsubishi. He was heading to the office to finish up, clear out and head home, and that's when he saw the plane, high up in the sky over Hiroshima. He watched it drop a silvery speck into the air, and instinctively, says science writer Sam Kean, "he dove to the ground and covered his eyes and plugged his ears with his thumbs."

This was no ordinary bomb. The earth below shook, Yamaguchi was thrown up in the air, then smashed down and lost consciousness.

He tried crawling across a logjam of corpses...

When he awoke, the city around him was dark, though it was early morning; above him was a towering cloud of ash. His skin was hot, his forearms (where he'd rolled up his sleeves) were sunburned. Not knowing what to do, he headed numbly to Mitsubishi headquarters. It wasn't there. The building had dissolved into a mess of rubble.

So with nowhere to go and desperate to get away from the destruction and the burned bodies, he heard a rumor the railroad might still be working. He decided to head for the train station, which was across a river. The bridges were down. He tried crawling across a logjam of corpses, but couldn't cross, then found a single railroad beam and made it to the other side, where, amazingly, trains were indeed leaving for other cities. He pushed himself onto one heading southwest to his hometown...Nagasaki.

Gamma Rays

When the blast hit Hiroshima, Yamaguchi was less than a mile and a half from ground zero. The explosion sent supercharged gamma rays flying out in all directions. When those rays hit Yamaguchi, they no doubt damaged the DNA in his cells, breaking some of the chemical bonds inside. At the time, no one knew if the DNA molecule could survive a gamma ray assault. The assumption was the damage would be serious and probably inheritable, that bomb victims would be cursed for multiple generations. Hermann Muller, who won the Nobel Prize in 1946 for his work on radiation, told The New York Times that if atomic bomb survivors "could foresee the results 1,000 years from now...they might consider themselves more fortunate if the bomb had killed them."

In his new book, The Violinist's Thumb, Sam Kean (a Radiolab regular), describes what happened next. In the short run, DNA damage creates radiation sickness, (headaches, vomiting, internal bleeding, peeling skin, anemic blood) and all that happened to Mr. Yamaguchi. He found his wife and 2-year-old son, rested for a day (or rather, went in and out of consciousness), and then, on Aug. 9, he headed to Mitsubishi offices in Nagasaki to hand in his assignment. When he arrived, he told his boss about the strange new bomb that had evaporated parts of Hiroshima, but the boss, writes Sam, didn't believe him.

"You're an engineer," he barked. "Calculate it. How could one bomb...destroy a whole city?" Famous last words. [At that moment] a white light swelled inside the room. Heat prickled Yamaguchi's skin, and he hit the deck of the ship engineering office. "I thought," he later recalled, "the mushroom cloud followed me from Hiroshima."

Japanese researchers later learned that roughly 150 people were unlucky enough to be in both in Nagasaki and Hiroshima when the bombs hit, but very few, only a handful, were in both blast zones, within 1.5 mile zone of intense radiation. Across Japan, the assumption was that these people shouldn't have children, that the gamma ray damage would be too heavy, too long-lasting to make child bearing safe.

'You're an engineer. Calculate it. How could one bomb...destroy a whole city?'

Shall We Have Children?

But by the early 1950's, Yamaguchi and his wife Hisako felt strong enough to try, and the early 50s, they had two girls, Naoko and Toshiko. Both were born without birth defects, though when they reached their teenage years, they said they got sick more often than some of their friends. Both are still alive. The Yamaguchis' young son, Kasutoshi, lived to be 58 and died of cancer.

What Happened To The Wife?

Mrs. Yamaguchi died in 2008 of liver and kidney cancer when she was 88. "The Nagasaki plutonium bomb probably caused both of her cancers, yes, " Sam writes, "but at those ages it's conceivable that [she] would have gotten cancer anyway, for unrelated reasons."

What Happened To The Kids?

While the Yamaguchi children may have had a slightly rougher time (their parents being triple blasted, he twice, she once), the big surprise is that after almost 70 years, there is no evidence of lasting DNA damage into the children of atomic bomb victims. A broad survey found no subsequent epidemic of birth defects, no high incidence of cancers. No large scale studies, says Sam, "have ever found significant evidence that these children had higher rates of any disease, or even higher rates of mutations. ... In the vast majority of cases, genetic fallout didn't settle onto the succeeding generation."

DNA To Its Own Rescue

DNA, it seems, has an extraordinary talent for mending itself. "After three-plus billion years of being exposed to cosmic rays and solar radiation," Sam writes, this essential molecule has apparently picked up ways to repair breaks in its structure. While no one wants to meet up with an exploding nuclear weapon, there is something remarkably resilient about a molecule that can take the hit (or a double hit) and stitch itself back into business ? as Mr. Yamaguchi's story illustrates.

He, amazingly, lived for another 65 years after the attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He died, of stomach cancer, in 2010. He was 93 years old.

What happened to bomb victims in Nagasaki and Hiroshima may not be the fate of people who lived near Chernobyl in Ukraine. For one thing, the Chernobyl meltdown released different types of radioactivity, fewer gamma rays and more radioactive poisoning from cesium, strontium and iodine ? which can do more harm at close range. Plus, Soviet officials made matters much worse by allowing cows to graze on grass downwind from the accident, and didn't destroy crops that had absorbed the radioactive waste, so people continued to eat and drink contaminated produce. When you continue to expose the body to radiation, you get sicker more often. When Japan had its recent Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident, the Japanese confiscated most contaminated food and drink within six days.

It may not be a frickin? shark with a frickin? laser beam attached to its head, but government scientists at the National Ignition Facility in California have fired the most powerful laser shot ever recorded.

The shot with the 192 laser beam system delivered more than 500 trillion watts of peak power and 1.85 megajoules of ultraviolet laser light to its target, measuring?2?millimeters in diameter.

That?s 1,000 times more power than the United States uses at any instant in time and 100 times more energy than any other laser regularly produces today.

The feat, according to the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, is a critical requirement for igniting hydrogen fusion fuel, a long-sought source of ?safe, secure, environmentally sustainable energy.??

Ultimately, the scientists aim to use the laser beams to ignite nuclear fusion, which will generate 10 to 100 times more energy than deposited by the laser beams. The the National Ignition Facility itself will not be used to generate electricity, but the experiments there are a step towards demonstrating the technology's feasibility.?

The target hit on the July 5 experiment was a depleted uranium capsule containing a mixture of hydrogen, deuterium and tritium. While it didn't ignite,?"the result demonstrates that the laser conditions required to achieve ignition are within reach,"?according to optics.org.?

When ignition will occur is unknown, though the facility aims to hit that?milestone by the end of 2012.

Children of NYC mom who killed husband pen book

NEW YORK (AP) ? Jennifer and Raymond Sheehan say their lives changed forever ? for the better ? the day their mother shot their retired police officer father to death.

Neither witnessed the shooting on Feb. 18, 2008. When they got the call, they expected to hear that their mother was dead. They figured her end was only a matter of time after years of physical and emotional abuse at the hands of their father, Raymond Sr.

So when Raymond Jr. learned it was his dad who was dead, he felt an immense relief. "Like a weight lifted off my shoulders," he said.

But there was more stress to come. Their mother, Barbara, would be tried for murder and their family's dark, disturbing secrets would be cracked open in court.

Less than a year after Barbara Sheehan was acquitted for fatally shooting her husband 11 times at their Queens home, her children have published a book about the ordeal.

"In Bed With the Badge: The Barbara Sheehan Story" goes on sale Tuesday. It details her life and descent into abuse and despair, and includes notes and recollections from Raymond and Jennifer and from family friends who witnessed the abuse.

The two siblings said they focused the account on their mother ? and not their own experience ? because they hoped her story would serve as a cautionary tale for other abused women and help them see the early warning signs.

"Going through everything after my mom killed my father, living their experiences, we wanted to show other people the importance of getting out of a bad relationship before it's too late," Raymond Sheehan said in an interview with The Associated Press.

The 22-year-old took the stand in his mother's defense last fall during the trial, which was much more difficult than writing the book, he said. He was grilled on his childhood and admitted on the stand that he thought of suicide, telling of horrific memories where his mother was burned by scalding pasta sauce thrown by his angry father.

"All the personal stuff came out in the trial. That was the big thing," he said. "The book felt almost easy."

The trial was brutal for the family. Jennifer and Raymond took leave from school and from work to be with their mother, who was out on bail after mortgaging two family homes. Aunts, uncles, grandparents and friends filled the courtroom seats, many donning purple ? the color for domestic violence.

And dirty laundry was aired. Jurors heard of the elder Raymond's consistent threats, his physical and verbal abuse, and bizarre sexual habits he forced on his wife, as Barbara and her children testified that he created a culture of fear at home. They said they never told anyone, especially the police, because he said he would kill them if they did.

Prosecutors argued Barbara was a woman happy with her life and a willing participant in her husband's sexual proclivities. They suggested she killed her husband for money. Friends testified the couple seemed normal and happy, and they did not suspect anything violent at home.

But the elder Raymond's children said the 49-year-old former police sergeant put on a nicer face for the public.

In their book, the siblings explore the question of why their mother would stay with an abusive man for more than 20 years. They interviewed her about her past and learned of his manipulative behavior as far back as the first dates.

"I think after this all happened and she realized how bad the psychological and physical abuse was that she was going through even then, she started thinking back and realizing 'Oh, this wasn't normal,'" said Jennifer Sheehan, 26.

The 250-page book includes a robust appendix. "Domestic Violence, How to get Help, Cops as Abusers and other statistics" is designed to give readers some helpful tools, Jennifer Sheehan said.

"We want people to know the signs of what an abuser is and what they do to control you, even from the very beginning," she said.

Raymond is getting married and will be in graduate school in New York in the fall. Jennifer lives in San Diego and works as an oncology nurse. Barbara Sheehan, 50, convicted on one weapons charge and sentenced to 5? years in prison, is out on bail while appealing her conviction.

Barbara Sheehan didn't comment for this story. Her children said she was happy with the book.

A call to Raymond Sheehan's brother Vincent was not returned.

Changing Lives Press is the book publisher. The book costs $24.99. It also will be available as an e-book.
