British Ticket Buyers Demand Refunds After Watching The Artist
It looks like not everyone loves "The Artist." According to the Telegraph, a "small number" of Liverpool filmgoers were so surprised to find that the Best Picture frontrunner was silent, they demanded their money back.
"I thought it was really funny and laughed," Nicola Shearer, a 25-year-old Liverpool resident going to see "The Artist" told the Telegraph after being reminded by theater personnel that the film was silent. "Of course, I knew it was and I asked the usher why she wanted to know. She then told me some people complained and asked for refunds because there is no sound and the screen is smaller."
After first denying that any refunds were handed out, an Odeon Liverpool One representative confirmed that some guests received their money back after being dissatisfied with the film.
This isn't the first time a critically acclaimed 2011 film has come under fire from ticket buyers. A Connecticut movie theater refused refunds over the summer when patrons walked out of Terrence Malick's polarizing film, "The Tree of Life."
"We encourage patrons to read up on the film before choosing to see it," read a sign posted at the Avon Theater in Stamford, Conn. It later added, "We hope you expand your horizons with us."
Starring Golden Globe-winning actor Jean Dujardin, Berenice Bejo and Uggie the dog, "The Artist" is a silent film about a silent film star faced with dwindling job opportunities following the invention of talkies. It's expected to be a major player at the Academy Awards next month, and could earn up to up to ten nominations; on Tuesday, the film earned 12 BAFTA nominations.
Worldwide, "The Artist" has grossed $27 million since its release; here in the U.S., it is creeping up to $10 million, a number that should expand fairly significantly once the Oscar nominations are announced.

Rock Hall of Fame opens archives to public (AP)
CLEVELAND ? The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum opened its new library and archives to the public on Tuesday to give scholars and fans access to the stories behind the music through such "artifacts" as personal letters from Madonna and Aretha Franklin and 1981-82 video of the Rolling Stones tour.
The collection, catalogued over the last few years, includes more than 3,500 books, 1,400 audio recordings and 270 videos, and is housed in the new four-story, $12 million building.
Thousands more books and recordings and hundreds of videos will be added as previously stored items and new donations are catalogued, said Andy Leach, director of the library and archives.
"We hope to serve music scholars, teachers, students and the general public," Leach said. "We hope to see all of them here."
Tuesday's opening of the building on the Cuyahoga Community College campus in Cleveland, not far from the Rock Hall, occurred without a lot of fanfare. The low-key opening allows the public to enjoy the library before a grand opening April 9. The college funded the building, which the library and archives share with the college's Center for Creative Arts. The Rock Hall financed construction and furnishings of the interior of its section of the building.
The library also offers photos, albums and covers, oral histories and scrap books.
Leach said the Rock Hall has done a great job of telling the story of rock `n' roll. He said he sees the library as bringing the museum more recognition and showing "it to be a serious place of research."
The library collection also includes movie posters, photos and memorabilia related to Alan Freed, the DJ credited with coining the phrase rock `n' roll; a handwritten list by Elvis Presley of songs included in one of his concerts; and personal letters from artists including Mick Jagger.
Visitors will not be allowed to check out items, but anyone can use the library reading room to browse through books, listen to audio recordings and watch videos. A smaller archives reading room allows supervised access to certain items.
Steve Waksman, an associate professor of music and American studies at Smith College in Massachusetts, did research at the library prior to its opening for his book on the history of American live music.
"It was very useful, with material that I haven't found anywhere else," Waksman said Tuesday. "They had a lot of material regarding the stage sets of music performers from the `60s and the `70s, such as David Bowie and the Rolling Stones."
Elizabeth Papp Taylor, 53, of Shaker Heights, was at the library opening day.
"I'm looking forward to coming back for a look at the archives, but my first visit was exciting," she said in a phone interview. "It's very impressive."

Jason Alderman: Easing Student Loan Repayments
College costs are out of control. Total outstanding student loans hover around $1 trillion, second only to home mortgages as the largest debt Americans carry. Student loan repayment takes a hefty toll on starting salaries even during good economic times. But with so many recent graduates unable to find a decent job -- or any job at all -- repayment can be a nightmare.
You can't just walk away from student loan debt. It's practically impossible to get it discharged through bankruptcy and there's no statute of limitations on how long lenders can pursue you through collections. Indeed, the government can withhold tax refunds and garnish your wages indefinitely; plus, your credit score will take a huge hit.
It's against that backdrop that the Obama administration recently accelerated improvements to a readily available, yet underused, student loan repayment plan called Income-Based Repayment (IBR) that had been slated to begin in 2014.
If you're having difficulty paying off your student loans and want to avoid defaulting, IBR and other options are available that might help:
IBR is available for many types of federally guaranteed student loans and can be particularly beneficial for low-income families, the unemployed and people with lower-paying, "public service" jobs in education, the government or non-profit organizations.
Under IBR, required monthly payments are capped at an affordable level relative to your adjusted gross income, family size and state of residence. For example, if you earn less than 150 percent of the government's poverty level for your family size, you would pay zero. You still owe the money, but are not required to begin making payments until your income increases. As your income increases, so will your monthly payment -- but up to no more than 15 percent of income that exceeds that same 150 percent of poverty level.
In addition, the government will forgive any debt still owed after 25 years of consistent repayment. And those qualifying under the public service definition must only repay for 10 years before the balance is erased.
Under the recent IBR program enhancements, students who took out their first loan during or after 2008 and take out at least one additional loan during or after 2012 will now see the cap drop from 15 to 10 percent and the forgiveness period drop to 20 years. Those with older loans can still benefit from the original IBR terms.
A few other IBR features:
- All Stafford, PLUS and Consolidation Loans made under either the Direct Loan program or the now-defunct Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) program are eligible for repayment under IBR, except loans in default, Parent PLUS Loans or Consolidation Loans containing Parent PLUS Loans.
- You must submit updated income documentation to your lender each year. If your income rises, so will your payment amount, although never above what you would otherwise pay under a standard 10-year repayment schedule.
- There is no qualifying income ceiling, although higher-income people would need extremely high outstanding loan balances to qualify for IBR.
- Because IBR will likely extend the term of your loan, you'll probably accrue more interest than under a standard 10-year payoff.
- The amount of debt discharged after the forgiveness period will be subject to income tax unless Congress changes the current law. (Exception: Debt for those in the 10-year public service program will be discharged tax-free after 120 monthly payments).
- Unfortunately, private student loans do not qualify for IBR.
If, after you've already begun repaying your student loans, your income is too low to meet payments, contact your lender, which can determine whether they qualify for IBR.
Under another program enhancement, borrowers with two types of federal loans -- at least one each issued under the Direct Loan program and the old FFEL program -- may consolidate their loans under a new Special Direct Consolidation Loans program between January 1, 2012, and June 30, 2012.
Doing so will lower your FFEL loan rates by 0.25 percent to a fixed rate that cannot exceed 8.25 percent. An additional 0.25 percent discount is also available if you sign up for automatic payments. Plus, you'll only have to write one monthly check instead of paying multiple lenders. Several types of loans are ineligible, including loans in default, Perkins Loans and private loans. Before you make the switch, make sure you aren't eligible for a more favorable FFEL discount rate from your current lender if you make a certain number of on-time payments.
If you expect your financial hardship to be temporary, other loan repayment options, such as economic hardship deferment, forbearance and extended repayment, may be better options. For details on these options, read the Department of Education's Postponing Repayment site or FinAid.org's Solutions for Borrowers Who are Having Trouble Repaying Education Loans. FinAid.org also features a calculator to compare IBR with standard and extended repayment options under a variety of income scenarios.

WAKE FOREST ? Wake County's Interfaith food shuttle now has five new trucks to help deliver groceries to those in need.
The Ford Motor Company donated the trucks, including a refrigerated truck, to the food shuttle's mobile market in Wake Forest. The company also filled the refrigerated truck with fresh produce.
The donation is part of a partnership between Ford, salad-dressing firm Newman's Own, and ?Feeding America? a national network of food banks.
Leaders said the truck will be very useful.
"It's to give back to reach people in need, it's a reward. When we're able to fulfill people like this, it's why we work at the food shuttle," said director of food donors Don Eli.
The interfaith food shuttle hosts more than 30 free mobile markets for the needy each month. They serve seven counties in the region.

Louis C.K. talks "Pootie Tang" a "very huge mistake" (Reuters)
LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Louis C.K. is thriving -- his standup gigs are packed, his hit FX show "Louie" is a critical darling, and his self-produced standup special, "Live at the Beacon Theater," turned a very fast profit.
But he took a few minutes Sunday to look back on what he considers one of his greatest failures: "Pootie Tang."
During a panel at the Television Critics Association winter press tour, C.K. was informed that John Waters longed for a novelization of the 2001 film, which C.K. was fired from directing.
"That's really nice. I love John Waters. He's a great filmmaker," C.K. said, before adding, "I wish he praised me for something else."
He went on to call "Pootie Tang" -- a comedy about a belt-wielding ghetto folk hero -- "a tragedy to me," and "a very huge mistake" that "never should have been made."
C.K. said he was credited with directing the film even after his firing.
"I would feel really good if I had been making a great movie and then they kicked me off. But I was sucking at making the movie, and they rightfully fired me. And then it came out with my name on it, so," he said.
He also described producer John Goldwyn screaming at him in his office at Paramount: "His face was really red, and I was sitting there going, wow, I'm really a movie guy now."
Everything worked out: C.K. said he learned from "Pootie Tang" what mistakes not to make, and that the experience helped prepare him for write, produce, direct, edit and star in "Louie."
"I think that a failing at 'Pootie Tang' is why this show is good," he said. "It's one of the reasons. It's that and a huge - just an army of failures that have wrecked my life, made me good at this.
He added: "I got to make a movie finally, which was my dream, and it was terrible, and then it got made even more terrible, and then it came out, and I was just hated. I mean, the first time I was known by a lot of people was because I made a bad movie.
"And I remember watching Roger Ebert say -- I grew up watching Roger Ebert doing movie criticism, and he said, 'I can't even say this is a bad movie, because it's not even complete. It's incomplete. It's not even a movie.' It was the worst. I think it's probably the worst review he ever gave to a movie."
"But the great thing is that after maybe a week, it just goes away, and all you're left with is the forensic evidence of all the mistakes you made and all of the rocks that you've kind of crashed into, and you're left with this beautiful map of where all the dangers are, and you repair all the holes, and then you're so much better."
