Nukotoys Animal Planet trading cards: $1.99, 3-pack; $3.99, 7-pack
Nukotoys has developed a series of high-tech trading cards based on Animal Planet's extensive library, so now your kids can play with warthogs, water buffaloes and elephants -- without all the travel expenses and painful innoculations. Interacting with an iOS app, the creature cards come to life.

Kids can buy random packs of either physical or virtual cards, which contain pictures, trivia and conservational information. Placing the card against an Apple tablet or phone screen conjures an animated 3-D image of that animal. They can then interact with the animal through on-screen gestures or by tilting the device. The animals interact as well; for instance, in one scene a lion suddenly appears and begins to chase away a gazelle that was already there!
It's a natural way for kids to learn and play in a mixed world of physical and digital. As Nukotoys co-CEO Rodger Raderman explained to Discovery News recently at?the 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show, "If you look at the licenses we've chosen, these aren't your typical shoot 'em up-type games. We wanted to really recognize the power that these devices have, to really engage kids' imaginations."

The Animal Planet series will have 50 animals amongst the 60 cards in the collection. Monsterology, Nukotoys' other trading card game, will have 75 monsters and 100 cards. Both will be available online and in major retailers in March. The free app works without buying cards, but it increases in fun as the virtual Serengeti's population does as well.
