ANAHEIM, California ? Fisker Automotive is recalling an estimated 2,400 Fisker Karma plug-in hybrids to fix a defective cooling fan unit that was the cause of a vehicle fire in Woodside, California, on August 10.

"This recall campaign is not expected to have a material financial impact on Fisker," said the automaker in a statement on Saturday.

This is the second time this year that a Fisker Karma, which costs more than $100,000, has caught on fire.

Fisker said its investigation of the California fire "located the ignition source to the left front of the Karma, forward of the wheel, where the low temperature cooling fan is located. The final conclusion was that this sealed component had an internal fault that caused it to fail, overheat and start a slow-burning fire."

The incident was not caused by the lithium-ion battery pack, new technology components, engine component packaging or the unique exhaust routing of the Karma, said Fisker.

"We are committed to responding swiftly and decisively to events such as this to ensure total customer satisfaction," said Henrik Fisker, Fisker executive chairman and co-founder, in a statement. "This incident resulted from a single, faulty component, not our unique EVer powertrain or the engineering of the Karma."

The recall follows a nearly week-long investigation by Fisker and investigators from the Pacific Rim Investigative Services Group.

Fisker said it has contacted the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which oversees vehicle recalls in the U.S. But NHTSA had not yet posted any information about the Fisker recall as of Monday morning.

Inside Line says: Fisker has not set a date for the Karma recall. It says customers will be contacted by its dealers, ahead of receiving formal notice from the company by mail.
