Providence chief executive Greg Van Pelt will retire | OregonLive.com

Greg Van Pelt, CEO of Providence Health & Services' Oregon region, plans to retire this spring. The Catholic nonprofit healthcare provider, one of the state's largest private employers, announced his retirement Friday.

Van Pelt assumed the top post in 2010 and plans to remain at Providence through June or until his replacement is found. His retirement will cap a 38-year career at Providence that started with an administrative internship at St. Vincent Medical Center in Washington County.

He played a key role in efforts to transform the state's health care system, sitting on the Oregon Health Leadership Council and leading its work group focused on Oregon Health Plan reforms. He also worked to launch the state's Healthy Start program and the Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Center, which provides low-cost care in Washington and Yamhill counties.

"Greg has been successful because he has kept our mission and values at the core of everything he does, during good economic times and challenging times," said Dr. John Koster, president of Providence, in a statement issued by the health care system.
