Will Hurricane Sandy Leave Higher Insurance Rates In Its Path ...

People from the DC area to New England woke up this morning and began to check around their homes and property to see if they made it through Hurricane Sandy without being pummeled. But even if you?re not one of the ones wondering how your patio grill ended up in your attic, you might still be paying the price in higher insurance premiums.

?Even if you haven?t been hit, [that] doesn?t mean some of your neighbors haven?t been adversely impacted by the storm and that could impact you,? a spokesman for the Insurance Information Institute tells SmartMoney.

However, though an increase would certainly go along with the upward trend in homeowners policies (the national average rate has jumped 22% in just the last five years), the mild winter for most of the U.S. have thus far resulted in significantly fewer losses to insurers in 2012:

The first half of this year saw a drop in catastrophic losses, which totaled $13.8 billion, compared with $24.4 billion during the same period a year ago, according to the Insurance Information Institute. The industry?s overall net income after taxes skyrocketed during this period to $16.4 billion, compared with $4.8 billion a year prior.

Some independent insurance agents say that, in order to keep premiums from going higher than they already are, they will likely be advising some clients who have recently filed storm damage claims to refrain from doing so in this instance if they can afford to go out of pocket for the repairs. Homeowners who do file multiple claims in the span of a couple years raise the likelihood of being dropped when the policy comes up for renewal.

Beyond rate increases, insurers could also change the way they insure houses in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. Considering that Sandy is the second devastating hurricane to come through the area in just over a year, insurers could begin writing policies similar to what you find along the Gulf Coast, where homeowners will see wind damage claims limited or even excluded.

SmartMoney points out that if premiums were to increase, homeowners can offset the cost by increasing their deductible. They will have to pay more when they file a claim, but for those in a low-risk area, it might be a calculated risk worth considering.

Lesson Two From The National Foundation For Credit

BOSTON (CBS) ? More of the trick or treat tips on credit from the National Foundation for Credit Counseling.

  • Treat:? Arranging for your payments to be sent to creditors before the due date means you?ll never pay a late fee or have a dinged credit report.
  • Trick:? If you neglect to balance your checkbook and the automatic payment results in an overdraft, you?ve defeated the purpose.
  • Dee: Many consumers do not balance their checkbooks each month. You need to do that and you can use software like Quicken to help you keep track of your expenses. You should be aware of how much you are charging each month. You can keep a running total in your checkbook so you know what to expect on the credit card bill. I periodically check my credit card balance and checkbook balance online during the month.
  • Treat:? You can help another person establish credit, rebuild credit, or purchase something beyond what they could on their own credit worthiness.
  • Trick:? The co-signer and primary borrower are equally responsible for payment of the loan.? As well-meaning as people are, things happen.? Never co-sign on a loan unless you can afford to solely take over the payments.
  • Dee: Oh so true. I usually recommend that you never co-sign on a loan unless you have the money to gift or to give to the borrower outright. Especially if it?s a relative, like a kid or a sibling. Often they do not take it very seriously when they are late on a loan payment because they have you as a backup.

The NFCC further states, ?Consumers should thoroughly research and fully understand the risks and benefits to any financial decision. Simply because an offer sounds appealing, doesn?t mean it is.?

Remember there are pros and cons to every financial decision we make!

Boyd leads No. 14 Clemson past Wake, 42-13

(AP) ? Tajh Boyd kept throwing deep balls. Sammy Watkins kept catching them. A couple of school records later, and nobody's concerned about No. 14 Clemson's offense anymore.

Boyd threw for a school-record 428 yards with five touchdown passes and Watkins added a school-record 202 yards receiving in the Tigers' 42-13 rout of Wake Forest on Thursday night.

Boyd was 27 of 38 and connected with Watkins for three plays of 50 or more yards, including a 61-yarder for a score.

"Tajh was just lights out," coach Dabo Swinney said. "And now maybe everybody will quit asking me about Sammy Watkins."

Watkins, who missed three games because of suspension and illness, had eight receptions. Boyd added touchdown throws of 9 yards to Brandon Ford, 12 yards each to Sam Cooper and DeAndre Hopkins and 2 yards to Charone Peake.

The Tigers (7-1, 4-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) scored the first 35 points, including a four-touchdown second quarter, in their fourth consecutive victory and fourth straight in the series with the Demon Deacons (4-4, 2-4).

Five days after Virginia Tech held Clemson to season lows in every significant offensive statistic except the final score, the Tigers rolled up 534 total yards and essentially ended this one at halftime.

"We expect to execute in a manner that we score every time we get the ball," Boyd said. "So when you don't do it, sometimes it's kind of frustrating. Sometimes it's kind of disappointing. But all you can do is just keep working, keep pushing."

Boyd broke Charlie Whitehurst's 10-year-old record of 420 yards passing after Watkins took care of the school's receiving mark of 197 yards set last month by Hopkins against Boston College.

"We knew that was coming," offensive coordinator Chad Morris said of Watkins. "You see that spark, and it just gives everybody that much energy. ... Getting him going at the right time ? this team's going to need him the most at this point in time in the season."

Morris said the coaches left Boyd in well into the fourth quarter because they wanted him to reach 400 yards passing for the first time ? and wound up with the record when he hit Martavis Bryant for 37 yards.

Tanner Price was 27 of 44 for 232 yards for Wake Forest. He threw touchdown passes covering 8 and 18 yards to Tommy Bohanon.

The Demon Deacons had minus-23 yards rushing in the first half. They've played two Top 25 teams and have been outscored 94-13 while allowing 1,146 total yards.

"I don't know that we didn't respect" Clemson's speed, Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe said. "I think we didn't realize how fast those guys were."

D.J. Howard added a late 1-yard touchdown run for Clemson, which was legitimately concerned after its lackluster 38-17 victory over the Hokies. In that game, the Tigers managed just 160 yards passing, 135 yards rushing and 295 total yards ? a performance that left Morris vowing it wouldn't happen again.

It certainly didn't ? at least, not during an overwhelming first half.

The defending ACC champions eclipsed last week's yardage total by halftime, gaining 343 yards before the break.

Watkins, who sat out for the Tigers' first three plays because he was three minutes late for a team meeting, got the offense rolling on its third possession. He slipped behind the Wake Forest secondary and Boyd found him down the left sideline for the 57-yard pass that set up his touchdown pass to Ford.

Watkins then made it 14-0 on the first play of the second quarter when he took a throw from Boyd near the sideline, shook off two tacklers and outran two more on his way to his first touchdown reception of the season.

"You give up a big play or two, that kind of gets everybody a little bit spooky back there and then you give up a couple more by not playing real aggressively," Grobe said.

Boyd, who also threw for five TDs last year in a home win against North Carolina, then hit Cooper with a scoring pass 6 minutes later, and by then, the Tigers were well on their way to their sixth win in seven meetings with Wake Forest.

Someday that technique that may let children avoid inheriting certain diseases - and give them genes from another woman besides Mom. (AP Photo/Oregon Health & Science University)

(AP) ? Scientists in Oregon have created embryos with genes from one man and two women, using a provocative technique that could someday be used to prevent babies from inheriting certain rare incurable diseases.

The researchers at Oregon Health & Sciences University said they are not using the embryos to produce children, and it is not clear when or even if this technique will be put to use. But it has already stirred a debate over its risks and ethics in Britain, where scientists did similar work a few years ago.

The British experiments, reported in 2008, led to headlines about the possibility someday of babies with three parents. But that's an overstatement. The DNA from the second woman amounts to less than 1 percent of the embryo's genes, and it isn't the sort that makes a child look like Mom or Dad. The procedure is simply a way of replacing some defective genes that sabotage the normal workings of cells.

The British government is asking for public comment on the technology before it decides whether to allow its use in the future. One concern it cites is whether such DNA alteration could be an early step down a slippery slope toward "designer babies" ? ordering up, say, a petite, blue-eyed girl or tall, dark-haired boy.

Questions have also arisen about the safety of the technique, not only for the baby who results from the egg, but also for the child's descendants.

In June, an influential British bioethics group concluded that the technology would be ethical to use if proven safe and effective. An expert panel in Britain said in 2011 that there was no evidence the technology was unsafe but urged further study.

Laurie Zoloth, a bioethicist at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., said in an interview that safety problems might not show up for several generations. She said she hopes the United States will follow Britain's lead in having a wide-ranging discussion of the technology.

While the kind of diseases it seeks to fight can be terrible, "this might not be the best way to address it," Zoloth said.

Over the past few years, scientists have reported that such experiments produced healthy monkeys and that tests in human eggs showed encouraging results. The Oregon scientists reported Wednesday that they have produced about a dozen early human embryos and found the technique is highly effective in replacing DNA.

The genes they want to replace aren't the kind most people think of, which are found in the nucleus of cells and influence traits such as eye color and height. Rather, these genes reside outside the nucleus in energy-producing structures called mitochondria. These genes are passed along only by mothers, not fathers.

About 1 in every 5,000 children inherits a disease caused by defective mitochondrial genes. The defects can cause many rare diseases with a host of symptoms, including strokes, epilepsy, dementia, blindness, deafness, kidney failure and heart disease.

The new technique, if approved someday for routine use, would allow a woman to give birth to a baby who inherits her nucleus DNA but not her mitochondrial DNA. Here's how it would work:

Doctors would need unfertilized eggs from the patient and a healthy donor. They would remove the nucleus DNA from the donor eggs and replace it with nucleus DNA from the patient's eggs. So, they would end up with eggs that have the prospective mother's nucleus DNA, but the donor's healthy mitochondrial DNA.

In a report published online Wednesday by the journal Nature, Shoukhrat Mitalipov and others at OHSU report transplanting nucleus DNA into 64 unfertilized eggs from healthy donors. After fertilization, 13 eggs showed normal development and went on to form early embryos.

The researchers also reported that four monkeys born in 2009 from eggs that had DNA transplants remain healthy, giving some assurance on safety.

Mitalipov said in an interview that the researchers hope to get federal approval to test the procedure in women, but that current restrictions on using federal money on human embryo research stand in the way of such studies.

The research was funded by the university and the Leducq Foundation in Paris.

Dr. Douglass Turnbull of Newcastle University in Britain, whose team has transplanted DNA between eggs using a different technique, called the new research "very important and encouraging" in showing that such transplants could work.

But "clearly, safety is an issue" with either technique if it is applied to humans, he said.

Obama zings Trump on 'Tonight Show'

By Natalie Finn, E! Online

Apparently President Barack Obama did hear about Donald Trump's huuuge announcement.?"This all dates back to when we were growing up together in Kenya," Obama joked Wednesday on "The Tonight Show," when Jay Leno -- comparing the situation to himself and David Letterman -- asked about Trump, who earlier today offered to donate $5 million to charity in exchange for a look at the president's college and passport records.

"We had constant run-ins on the soccer field," Obama continued as Leno mimed notching a point down for the commander-in-chief.

Clint Eastwood stars in a new, chair-free Romney campaign ad

"He wasn't very good and resented it. When we finally moved to America, I thought it would be over."

And, as it turns out, the two have never even met.

Speaking of the first lady, check out some of Michelle Obama's most fashionable moments

Leno also quizzed Obama about his much-criticized performance in his first debate against Mitt Romney.

Obama's performance in the third presidential debate made Lindsay Lohan "proud"

"The truth is, this is not a natural way of communicating," Obama explained. "You don't sit next to somebody and have an extended argument with them like that.... With Michelle, I just concede every point. That's why we celebrated our 20th anniversary."

"There are worse things that can happen than forgetting to give your wife a gift," he cracked.

But when discussing his plan to vote early when he visits Illinois on his "48-hour campaign marathon extravaganza" this week, it didn't sound like he's too far in the dog house with the first lady, noting, "Michelle told me she voted for me."

See how the stars reacted to the final presidential debate

And, good news for trick-or-treaters on Pennsylvania Avenue who may have received fruit last year at the behest of Michelle Obama:?"It is an election year, so candy for everybody," Obama announced. "If anybody comes from Ohio to the White House, they will get a Hershey bar about this big," he added, holding his hands far apart.

Finally, the president was asked by a fan who submitted a question via Facebook if there was a cure for Romnesia.

"Obamacare covers preexisting conditions," he said.

Nuclear-free energy security unlikely | Eco-Business.com

Nobuo Tanaka, former head of the International Energy Agency, explains why nuclear might not be going anywhere. Image: Asia Future Energy Forum 2012, Eco-Business.

The former head of the International Energy Agency, Nobuo Tanaka, is not ready to count nuclear energy out of a future Asian energy mix, particularly in light of waning American interest in the Middle East.

In his opening keynote address at the Asia Future Energy Forum in Singapore on Tuesday, Mr Tanaka said it was doubtful that the world ? and Japan in particular ? would be able to meet energy security goals without nuclear power.

With its growing demand for oil, Asia would be especially vulnerable to potential petroleum supply disruptions in the Middle East, where Iran is currently threatening to block access for oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz (see sidebar).

North America will achieve energy independence in the near future, which may prompt the US to decrease its defensive presence in the Middle East, said Mr Tanaka.

He added that a major disruption in the Strait of Hormuz could lead to oil prices of up to US$160 per barrel, triggering a severe crisis in Japan. Without nuclear power to diversify the energy mix, Japan?s federal deficit may reach 12 trillion yen, he said.

/>/>/>/> />

Japan was one of several countries that committed to phasing out nuclear power following the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster, and currently only two of its 50 nuclear plants are operating. Nuclear plants generated 30 per cent of Japan?s electricity prior to the disaster.

To make up for the loss, Japan has increased imports of fossil fuels such as natural gas, and introduced policies to boost renewable energy development.

?I am sceptical about the feasibility of this plan. It is good to develop renewable energy for energy security, but it?s costly,? said Mr Tanaka, who is currently an associate for energy security and sustainability at Japan?s Institute of Energy Economics.

The new feed-in tariff (FiT) that the government introduced in July, which mandates that utilities purchase solar energy at a cost premium for the next 20 years, is the world?s highest at 42 yen per kilowatt-hour.

While expensive, the FiT is having an impact: Solar could expand by 2,000 megawatts by the end of March, according to the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

Natural gas also comes at a cost premium, noted Mr Tanaka, explaining that Japan?s gas prices are about 5 times higher than in the United States and twice as much as in Europe. He further noted that, while global natural gas supplies are expanding because of recent technologies such as shale gas extraction, global demand is ramping up as well.

For Japan ? and the rest of Asia ? to reduce gas prices and improve energy security, Asia will need better physical connections between its various energy and electricity supplies, he said, pointing out that connectivity allows Germany to phase out nuclear energy ?because it can always import electricity from neighbours in shortfall?.

Mr Tanaka said that Europe as a region has achieved relative energy security because of the diverse energy sources it can access using connected electricity grids as well as oil and natural gas pipelines.

To further diversify, Europe has been working on extending its grid connection to North Africa and the Middle East in a project known as Desertec.

Asia could also create such a ?super-grid? incorporating new and existing pipelines within Asia as well as pipelines from Russia, he told the 200 policymakers, industry players and thought leaders attending the forum.

In the absence of a growing nuclear industry, Mr Tanaka said, new technologies such as hydrogen fuel and storage systems, and super-conductivity transmission lines ? which do not lose power over long distances ? were key. However, he added that the region would also need natural gas to fill the gap and would need to invest in carbon capture and storage (CCS) to sustainably use its ample supplies of coal.

Even with such innovations, Mr Tanaka thinks that nuclear ? in newer and safer models ? will persist, in part because of its role in reducing Europe?s dependence on Russian gas.

?I believe nuclear will continue to play a major role in the world? It will be necessary to convince the public that there are (safer) alternatives in nuclear power,? he said.

My Roots Juice Detox Cleanse: A 5-Day Diary | Dallas Shopping ...

My Roots Juice Detox Cleanse: A 5-Day Diary

Roots Juices Detox & Cleanse kit

Roots Juices Detox & Cleanse kit

I?d been wanting to do a quick detox when I discovered local juice line, Roots Juices, had a five-day, pre-packaged detox kit. I wasn?t looking for weight loss results, but a full-body cleanse that would flush me of all the garbage I?d be eating, let me reset my appetite, and help kick-start some better habits. I?ve done the Master Cleanse before, and in comparison, with it?s no-prep setup and nutritious ingredients (versus the Master Cleanse?s lemon, cayenne, and syrup concoction), the Roots Juices detox seemed like a more manageable alternative. Except for the cost.

Each day of the detox kit includes six juices and two waters and costs $50. That?s $250 for five days worth of product. Courtesy of Roots? public relations teams, I was offered a three-day trial, free of charge. At first, I hesitated, especially in light of all the recent freebie talk. Then I checked my rear in the mirror. It needed a detox, and I?m a broke editor. I covered the last two days out of pocket, and having experienced the entire shebang now, I will probably shell out for the whole thing again in the future. After calculating the cost of the usual weekly expenses (one grocery store trip, one happy hour, one dinner out, multiple work lunches), it rounds out to nearly the price of this detox. Plus, after comparing it to the?well known?BluePrint Cleanse, a similar pre-packaged juice kit, Roots is a steal. BluePrint comes with six juices (no waters) and rings up at $325.

Overall, I?d say the cleanse was relativity easy. Although exercise was out of the question for me, I didn?t feel hungry, I did feel mostly energized throughout, and I absolutely took away from it what I wanted: I?m eating better, exercising steadily, and, as a bonus, a few pounds down. Below is my diary.

The juices were delivered the Sunday before I began my detox. You can get up to three days? worth of product at a time, but some juices will last a little longer. They sure did look pretty, and I was feeling pretty stoked about getting started. But, of course, I had one more glass of wine.

The juice order goes like this:

Wake Up (carrot, apple, ginger, watermelon)
Refresh (cucumber, lime, mint, apple, ginger)
Lean & Fit (grapefruit, mint)
Go Green (kale, spinach, romaine, cucumber, lemon)
Restore (beets, carrots, apple, aloe, ginger)
Health Nut Almond Milk (almonds, dates, vanilla bean, sea salt, filtered water)
Aloe Vera H2O (aloe vera, water)
Chlorophyll H20 (chlorophyll, filtered water)

It?s recommended that you drink them every 2-3 hours.

I had a?surprising?number of people ask me, ?Can you drink alcohol?? Brace yourself for the answer. No. You can?t detox if you?re putting poison back in.

8:00 am Wakeup carrot juice is first. I like carrots. I?ll probably like carrot juice.
8:15 am I do not like carrot juice.
8:30 am I?m a little nauseous. I?m not used to putting dense, liquified nutrients in my body right when I get up. Not finishing this last swig.
10:30 am Refresh is decent. Clean and light. I can do this.
12:00 pm The Lean & Fit grapefruit juice is delicious. I?m at Pot Belly watching coworkers eat sandwiches, and, surprisingly, I don?t feel hungry. I feel empowered.
2:00 pm The Go Green is a delightful surprise. It?s not thick or chunky and tastes like drinking celery.
3:00 pm A headache has arrived. No pain killers. Defeats the purpose of detoxing.
4:00 pm I?m drinking the beet juice. I?m used to my mom?s, which is sweetened with more apple, but this is doable. I?m thinking about food now. I?m not hungry. Just thinking about food.
6:00 pm I haven?t been drinking much water in between. I?m just not thirsty.
6:30 pm Next up, Health Nut Almond Milk. (sip) Wait. Is this real? (sip) This is dessert. Better than dessert. This is creamy, nutty, delicious sweet heaven in a bottle.
7:30 pm I?m squeezing in the last two bottles quickly so I can stop peeing so much and get some sleep. The aloe water tastes like? water.
8:30 pm The chlorophyll water tastes like water.
9:30 pm I can?t stop peeing.

8:00 am I am a little loopy this morning. In fact, my vision is a bit off.
8:15 am The carrot juice isn?t as bad.
8:20 am Okay. It?s still pretty bad. I?m leaving a sip behind.
11:17 am Amazingly, I?m still not hungry.
1:00 pm Everyone?s eating Chinese delivery for lunch, but I can totally handle it.
3:15pm I finished the Go Green 45 minutes ago, but I?ll admit, this Chinese food in here smells good.
4:00 pm The beet juice makes my nose flare. It?s not that I don?t like it. Just makes my nose flare.
5:30 pm I have the hiccups. Again.
8:45 pm I?m having food cravings, but I?m not necessarily hungry. My teeth are coated in a film. Ew.

8:00 am This carrot juice gets easier every day. It?s like my body wants it. I drank the whole thing.
10:15 am The Refresh went down easy as pie. Yum. Pie.
12:00 pm I recognize that the kitchen smells good, but I?m still not hungry. The grapefruit juice is quite a delight. And I don?t even really like grapefruit juice. I?m using a straw now to avoid tooth slime.
1:30 pm I?ve got a headache that just won?t quit.
4:15 pm My muscles are crampy.
4:45 pm This headache stinks. I?m feeling antsy to eat. I think I?m just bored. Ready for the almond milk.
5:15 pm I?m feeling a little weak between the headache and muscle aches. This must be the detox.
6:00 pm I love you, sweet almond milk.
6:30 pm The headache from hell continues. Is it bedtime yet?
8:30 pm Boyfriend is making tacos in the kitchen. I?m going to kill him.

8:00 am Phew. Headache?s gone.
3:00 pm Woah. The day has flown by. What am I going to eat when this is over?
7:00 pm It?s a tiny bit challenging knowing there are tubs of Tex Mex in the fridge. (Hello, queso!) Not sure I would really eat it if I was given permission, though. I feel too? clean.

8:57 am I slept in. Feelin? good. One juice halfway down. Seven bottles to go.
12:30 pm I?ve been looking at raw and vegan recipes all day. I can?t wait to eat, but it?s out of excitement for the new foods I?m going to choose to eat, not hunger.
2:30 pm After bookmarking a handful of raw pesto and veggie recipes, the green drink isn?t as exciting, but it?s going down smoothly.
5:45 pm Aw, Health Nut Milk. I?m gonna miss you, friend.
9:30 pm Last water finished. Wait. The detox is over already?

Post Cleanse Diet
Roots Juices recommends following up your cleanse with three days of raw food eating to ?slowly wake up your digestive system.? I did not do that exactly. I was too excited to get back in the kitchen.

Saturday following the cleanse, I ate a banana for breakfast, raw salad (with spinach, grapes, red onion, and olive oil and vinegar) for lunch, and a vegan dinner of black beans, lettuce, salsa, and avocado. Sunday I made a banana, almond milk, and cocoa powder smoothie for breakfast, a black bean salad for lunch, and added a tortilla to the salad for dinner. I even went nuts and added a tablespoon of Greek yogurt. (It tastes identical to sour cream to me.)

It?s been more than a week since I finished the cleanse, and I feel great. The cleanse gave me the opportunity to take a break from eating, reevaluate what I wanted my diet to look like, and gave me the time to plan some changes. The few pounds lost (four on Sunday, once I got back to eating) have given me the motivation to keep it up. Now, I?m eating mostly vegan with cheese used as a treat rather than a standard ingredient in every meal. (I?ve dropped an extra couple pounds from that, making me feel cleaner and leaner than I have in a while.)

A few pointers from yours truly:

1. Carry a toothbrush and toothpaste. A gooey layer around your teeth might make itself at home from all the swigging.

2. Drink through a straw. To prevent tooth slime, try sipping a few juices down with a straw.

3. Map out your strategy. The juices are meant to be consumed every 2-3 hours. Plan ahead by penciling in times you want to drink each juice. This way, you get them all in without having to cram at the end of the day.

4. Get an extra pen. You will be crossing a lot of things off your to-do list. It?s amazing how much extra time you have when you?re not thinking about/preparing/inhaling meals.

5. Grocery shop the day before you?re planning to begin eating again. You don?t want to wake up ready for your first meal only to realize you don?t have appropriate foods to eat. Take a couple hours on the last day of your cleanse to meal-plan for the week. Nothing ruins a diet fast than not having access to healthy foods when you?re hungry.

Feel free to ask me anything?I?ll be honest?and if you?re interested in doing a cleanse yourself, you can order online.?It?s pretty simple. To sample a few juices individually, you can shop the selection at Beyond Pilates, Greenz at Equinox, Innergy Fitness, and a couple other places.

Update: I?ve already had a few questions, so I?m answering them here.

Q: Were you, um, running to bathroom all the time?
A: To relieve my bladder, yes. Otherwise, no.

Q: How were you not starving all the time?
A: After calculating the content of each juice, I discovered you?re still getting about 926 calories per day. I think the fact that you?re still?ingesting?nutrients, and often, alleviates that problem.

Store Potatoes with an Apple to Keep Them from Sprouting

Store Potatoes with an Apple to Keep Them from SproutingDo you hate those ugly sprouts that form on your potatoes after just a couple of weeks? It turns out an apple a day might keep those sprouts away and also help the potatoes last longer.

Designer Jihyun Ryou says that the ethlylene gas produced by apples prevents potatoes from sprouting. Since apples also cause other fruits and vegetables to ripen too quickly, storing the apples away from them is good for your other produce too. Ryou's other food storage tips on MoCo Loco are helpful too, such as storing root vegetables vertically.

The apples and potatoes storage tip has also been proven by America's Test Kitchen. In their experiment, potatoes stored with an apple stayed firm and sprout-free even after eight weeks, compared to potatoes stored without an apple; they turned out "largely soft, shriveled, and sad looking." So add an apple and save your potatoes.

Personal Branding Weekly and Facebook Marketing You

How to Win the Five-Second Resume Scan

One of the reasons that resumes are so hard to write is that they have to speak to many different audiences ? and to be compelling to each of them.

On top of that, they have to sell you in 5 seconds or less.

And, let's be honest, the email is open and the phone ringing in that five second time frame. In other words, it has to sell you in a very distracted five seconds.

That's a tall order.

Lucky for you, there are strategies that enable you to control where the reader's eyes look for that five seconds. And, when you control where they look, you can control what they think!

Five Ways to Pass the Five Second Scan

Start with a Super-Hero Summary

The very first thing anyone reading your resume should see is a concise statement of why they should hire you. This should be at the top, bold and discrete from your resume. It needs to be specific to the position and compelling.

By putting this summary up front, you make certain that they get the one-two punch, even if they only look at your resume for one second!

Draw Attention to Your Key Points

Start by outlining the key points that you want to make on your resume. Perhaps you'd like to draw attention to relevant industry experience, a specific software program you use or an achievement from a previous employer.

Once you have this outline, think about the best way to make these points jump out above all others. You may want to include a box of languages you know or highlight your business philosophy prior to your work experience.

Make a plan that will enable you to focus energy on the key points you want to get across.

Using Bolding Like a Pro

Bolding (and formatting generally) helps you control the eyes of the reader. So use it wisely.

If everything is bolded, nothing jumps out. If nothing is bolded, you are losing a huge opportunity to guide your reader to the most important parts of your application.

Here are some rules of thumb that will help you get past the five second scan (and earn you the interview!)

  • Less than 20% of the page should be bolded. Less is more.
  • Keep your formatting & bolding patterns consistent across jobs.
  • Bold only the key phrase in a line.
  • When you read through ONLY the bolded words on your resume, it should make sense

When you follow these rules, your reader's eyes will be able to glance down the page and still pull out all of the most important details!

Psst ? you can read more on bolding & formatting your resume here

Get Rid of Glaring Errors

The biggest thing that five second scans do is identify immediate "No" resumes. Glaring errors are a sure route to that pile.

Glaring errors are extremely common. Extremely.

Have someone else read your resume from start to finish. Use spell check (duh). Double check all acronyms, industry-specific names, etc.

Ensure that you have all the requisite information on your page. (Have you been meaning to fill in the years on that one position and forgot?)

Don't get rejected for a silly error.

Earn Yourself More Attention

This is the most interesting strategy. It's also the riskiest, but, when done well, pays off big time.

Put yourself in the place of a recruiter, HR or Hiring Manager. They've got a stack of resumes on their desk. A big one. Now ask yourself how you can stand out in a way that is both effective and positive.

This is not the time to send a baseball glove with the note "I'm a great catch." Will you stand out? Yes. Is it positive? Almost certainly not. You will be the punchline at lunch.

So let's talk about what is effective and positive: Using the Skills You Need for the Job to Stand Out.

What does that mean exactly? Let's take a look at some examples:

If you are in sales, it might mean using your follow-up and consistency to "close the deal" over the phone.

If you are a designer, it might mean using your application as an opportunity to show off your design skills ? specific to the company. (Use their branding, but make it your own!)

If you are in customer service, perhaps you include testimonials from callers you've handled.

The possibilities are endless. The idea is that you find a way to show the skills that you are going to need to excel at your work. This makes you unique and helps you to stand out in a way that is effective ? not tacky. And, of course, it will earn you more time and attention on your resume!

Why It Is Important to Cater to the Five Second Scan

It's a reality that 80+% of candidates get rejected in the five second scan. It may not be pretty, but it's true.

It's the scan that narrows the field and defines your competition. Your resume needs to be built to win the scan.

Implementing these changes will drastically improve your chances of getting the job ? and impressing recruiters, HR and hiring managers alike.

Lawyer files request for emergency stay of execution for Florida man who killed 8

[Updated at 4:08 p.m. ET] It looks like all of the appropriate briefs have been filed for the Supreme Court to consider John Ferguson's case, CNN Supreme Court Producer Bill Mears reports.

The decision should come in the next few hours.

[Updated at 1:25 p.m. ET] Laurel Bellows, the president of the American Bar Association, who rarely comments on upcoming executions said she was "alarmed" by the John Ferguson case.

Ferguson, scheduled to die tonight in Florida, has been diagnosed as a schizophrenic.

Here's Bellows' full statement:

"The American Bar Association is alarmed that Florida is poised to execute John Ferguson, a man diagnosed as severely mentally ill for more than 40 years, before the constitutionality of his execution is fully evaluated. Although a district court evidentiary hearing regarding Ferguson's competency is scheduled for Friday, that could be too late: His execution could occur as soon as today.

A federal trial judge had stayed Ferguson?s execution and ordered the hearing to afford 'full, reflective consideration' of Ferguson?s constitutional claims; however, that stay has now been lifted by the court of appeals. In the interest of justice, it is imperative that Ferguson?s execution be again stayed until there is an opportunity for the federal courts to fully review his insanity claims on the merits and thus ensure that his execution will be constitutional. To do otherwise would be to risk a terrible miscarriage of justice ? one that can never be undone."

[Posted at 10:00 a.m. ET] The attorney for a Florida man convicted of killing eight people asked the U.S. Supreme Court Tuesday for an emergency stay of execution, he told CNN.

John Ferguson, a diagnosed schizophrenic, is on death row for the murders in Hialeah and Carol City, Florida, in the late 1970s.

He was scheduled to be executed Tuesday at 6 p.m. ET at the Florida State Prison.

The Supreme Court "has said it?s a ?miserable spectacle? to execute the insane," Chris Handman, the Washington D.C.-based attorney for Ferguson, told CNN. ?We think the court should intervene to stop that execution from going forward today."

Read the petition (PDF)

Handman said a court found that Ferguson was mentally ill and had delusions which caused him to think he is the "Prince of God." A stay had been granted by a federal district court because of concerns about his mental capacities but that ruling was reversed by an appeals court.

"We think there are substantial constitutional questions here that will merit the Supreme Court of the United States to honor the stay of execution," Handman said. "We hope to hear from the Supreme Court in the next few hours."

In the meantime, officials at the prison in Starke, Florida, will go ahead with preparations for the execution, including fixing Ferguson's last meal, Misty Cash with the Florida Department of Corrections told CNN.

White House prepared to meet one-on-one with Iran

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The White House says it is prepared to talk one-on-one with Iran to find a diplomatic settlement to the impasse over Tehran's reported pursuit of nuclear weapons, but there's no agreement now to meet.

National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor said Saturday that President Barack Obama has made clear that he will prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon and will do whatever's necessary to block that from happening. Vietor said Iran must come in line with its obligations, or else faced increased pressure.

"The onus is on the Iranians to do so, otherwise they will continue to face crippling sanctions and increased pressure," Vietor said in a statement. He noted that efforts to get Iran back to the table with the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council and Germany ? the so-called "P5+1" ? continue.

Iran has been a recurring issue in the presidential election campaign and Vietor's statement was released shortly after The New York Times reported Saturday that the U.S. and Iran have agreed in principle for the first time to negotiations. The paper said Iran has insisted the talks wait until after the Nov. 6 election.

Vietor, however, denied that any such agreement had been reached.

"It's not true that the United States and Iran have agreed to one-on-one talks or any meeting after the American elections," he said. "We continue to work with the P5+1 on a diplomatic solution and have said from the outset that we that we would be prepared to meet bilaterally."

Obama and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney will meet Monday night in a debate focusing on foreign policy and Iran's nuclear ambitions will likely be a topic. Obama has said he'll prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. He hopes sanctions alongside negotiations can get Iran to halt uranium enrichment. But the strategy, which began during President George W. Bush's administration, hasn't worked yet. Obama holds out the threat of military action as a last resort. Romney has accused Obama of being weak on Iran and says the U.S. needs to present a greater military threat.

Despite unprecedented global penalties, Iran's nuclear program is advancing as it continues to defy international pressure, including four rounds of sanctions from the U.N. Security Council, to prove that its atomic intentions are peaceful.

Those sanctions, coupled with tough measures imposed by the United States and European nations are taking their toll, particularly on Iran's economy. Iranian authorities have in recent weeks been forced to quell protests over the plummeting value of the country's currency. The rial lost nearly 40 percent of its value against the U.S. dollar in a week in early October, but has since slightly rebounded.

U.S. officials say they are hopeful that pressure from the sanctions may be pushing Iran's leaders toward concessions, including direct talks with the United States. But several said on Saturday that they did not believe such discussions would happen any time soon.

If one-on-one talks are to occur, they would likely follow the model that the U.S. has used in six-nation nuclear disarmament talks with North Korea, the officials said.

In those discussions, U.S. negotiators have met separately with their North Korean counterparts but only as part of the larger effort, which also involves China, Japan, South Korea and Russia. Direct U.S.-North Korean talks are preceded and followed by intense consultations with the other members of the group.

However, the direct talks with North Korea have yet to bear fruit and U.S. officials warned that talks with Iran may not yield anything either. If U.S.-Iran talks do occur, they would likely be part of the P5+1 process, which groups the Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States and is overseen by the European Union. The group has met numerous times with Iranian officials but has yet to achieve any significant progress.

In late September, the group instructed EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton to reach out to Iran's top nuclear negotiator, Saeed Jalili, to organize another meeting. No date had been set for the possible resumption of talks.

Iran says its program is for peaceful energy and research purposes but Western nations fear the Islamic republic is determined to develop nuclear weapons and fundamentally reshape the balance of power in the Middle East. That would pose a grave threat to Israel.

Israel has threatened to strike Iran's nuclear facilities if Tehran doesn't stop uranium enrichment a process that can be a pathway to nuclear arms. Israel could decide to strike Iran's nuclear sites on its own, and Israeli leaders say time to act is running out. They have also hinted they would like U.S. support for any such attack.

An Israeli strike on Iran with or without Washington's involvement would likely draw retribution from Tehran including possible attacks on U.S. and Israeli interests overseas or disruptions to the transit of tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, which could send oil prices skyrocketing.

Obama has counseled patience as public as American public support for another Mideast conflict is low with the Iraq war over and the conflict in Afghanistan winding down.

BBC chief to face lawmakers over sex abuse scandal

LONDON (Reuters) - The head of the BBC goes before lawmakers on Tuesday with the publicly funded British broadcaster facing one of the biggest crises in its history over accusations it pulled a probe into sexual abuse by a former presenter as part of a wider cover-up.

George Entwistle, who only took charge at the 90-year-old media organization in August, will appear before parliament's Culture Committee the day after Prime Minister David Cameron said the BBC had serious questions to answer.

Police are investigating allegations Jimmy Savile, once one of Britain's most celebrated TV stars who died last year, abused women, including girls as young as 12, over a 60-year period with some of the attacks taking place on BBC premises.

Police opened a criminal inquiry into the allegations on Friday, saying more than 200 potential victims had come forward.

Entwistle, whose predecessor Mark Thomson is the New York Times Co's incoming chief executive, and other managers have come under pressure to explain why rumors about Savile were not investigated at the height of his fame in the 1970s and 80s.

But far more damaging are suggestions an investigation into the alleged sex crimes by the BBC's flagship "Newsnight" show was pulled a couple of months after Savile's death in October 2011 because it would clash with planned Christmas programs celebrating his life and charity work.

The editor of "Newsnight" stepped aside on Monday after the BBC said he had given an "inaccurate or incomplete" explanation of why his team's inquiry was dropped, prompting Cameron to voice concern that it appeared the BBC was changing its story.

The furor over Savile is the biggest controversy to surround the BBC since its director general and chairman resigned in 2004 after a judge-led inquiry ruled it had wrongly reported that former Prime Minister Tony Blair had "sexed up" intelligence to justify the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

It comes as British newspapers await the recommendations of a separate wide-ranging inquiry into journalistic ethics following the phone-hacking scandal at Rupert Murdoch's now closed News of the World tabloid.

INDEPENDENT REVIEWS

"If there was corporate jiggery pokery - I'm saying 'if' as there's no reason to believe there was ... then George is at the heart of it," Steve Hewlett, a media consultant and former BBC editor, told Reuters.

"Were it to emerge that Newsnight had been tinkered with because of corporate interests then that would be a disaster."

At the time of the Newsnight investigation, Entwistle was head of BBC Vision, which oversees BBC television's commissioning and programming.

Panorama said the BBC's head of news, Helen Boaden, had briefly told him in December about the program's investigation and that as a result he might have to change his Christmas programming schedules, which included Savile tributes.

Neither Boaden or Entwistle provided responses to Panorama about the conversation, the BBC said.

The BBC has launched two independent reviews of the allegations, but Entwistle will face scrutiny from lawmakers as to why his organization has apparently put out partial or misleading information since rival channel ITV first aired the accusations against Savile at the end of last month.

"Why was it (the Newsnight investigation) dropped? Why is it that the initial reasons given now appear to be contradicted by the journalists involved?" committee chairman John Whittingdale said, adding the suspicion of interference damaged the BBC's reputation.

He said the committee also wanted to know why Savile's behavior at the BBC had not been challenged when he was alive.

While Savile was little known beyond Britain, the eccentric, cigar-chomping one-time DJ was one of the most recognized TV personalities on British television, hosting prime-time shows.

But former colleagues have now come forward to say there had been rumors for years involving young girls and Savile, famous for his garish outfits and long blonde hair, and later knighted by Queen Elizabeth for his charity work.

Other BBC employees have talked of a culture at the corporation where women were groped and have hinted that Savile was not the only household name to have been involved.

"The whole Savile business is certainly one of the worst (crises) ... because Savile became what he became because of the BBC and he appears to have abused BBC premises and programs and staff to cover his tracks at the very least," Hewlett said.

"That's very difficult for the BBC who depend on the trust and affection of license payers for their existence really. Anything that undermines or damages that is serious."

Paid for by a yearly levy of 145.50 pounds ($230) on all British households with a color TV, critics have queried whether such this license fee funding arrangement should continue when some private media companies are struggling.
