kuttarpora: Heavy Equipment & Tools, Home Improvement: Skid ...

Skid & the Too Tiny Tunnel (Hardcover)
By Jeffery Stoddard

Review & Description

Skid, the littlest yellow tractor in the equipment yard, wants to be mighty like the giant bulldozers, tall cranes, and massive diggers who tower over him. But all the big machines tell him he is just a dinky tractor with a putt-putt engine. While they are busy building a new road through the mountain, Skid is left behind to take out the garbage.

When disaster strikes and a tunnel the machines are digging collapses, Pillar, the biggest bulldozer, is left trapped in the rubble. Only a small opening is left at the tunnel entrance and the only one who can fit through the opening is Skid who is afraid of the dark.

Now it's up to the tiniest tractor to save the day. Can Skid find the courage to do what he was made to do and prove that he doesn't have to be big to be mighty? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Deuteronomy 31:6 NIV

Divisions persist as climate talks open in Doha

By The Associated Press

DOHA, Qatar -- U.N. talks on a new climate pact resumed Monday in oil and gas-rich Qatar, where negotiators from nearly 200 countries will discuss fighting global warming and helping poor nations adapt to it.

The two-decade-old talks have not fulfilled their main purpose: reducing the greenhouse gas emissions that scientists say are warming the planet.

Attempts to create a new climate treaty failed in Copenhagen three years ago but countries agreed last year to try again, giving themselves a deadline of 2015 to adopt a new treaty.

A host of issues need to be resolved by then, including how to spread the burden of emissions cuts between rich and poor countries.

Focus on Kyoto Protocol, raising money
That is unlikely to be decided in the two-week talks in the Qatari capital of Doha, where negotiators will focus on extending the Kyoto Protocol, an emissions deal for industrialized countries, and trying to raise billions of dollars to help developing countries adapt to a shifting climate.

EPA

South African Foreign Minister Maite Nkoana Mashabane speaks during the opening of the climate talks in Doha, Qatar, on Monday.

Activists hope storm-struck US will deliver at Doha climate talks

"We all realize why we are here, why we keep coming back year and after year," said South Africa Foreign Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, who led last year's talks in Durban, South Africa. "We owe it to our people, the global citizenry. We owe it to our children to give them a safer future than what they are currently facing."

The U.N. process is often criticized, even ridiculed, both by climate activists who say the talks are too slow, and by those who challenge the scientific near-consensus that the global temperature rise is at least partly caused by human activity, primarily the burning of fossil fuels like coal and oil.

The concentration of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide has jumped 20 percent since 2000, according to a U.N. report released last week. The report also showed that there is a growing gap between what governments are doing to curb emissions and what needs to be done to protect the world from potentially dangerous levels of warming.

The goal of the U.N. talks is to keep the global temperature rise under 3.6 F, compared to pre-industrial times.

The Maldives, the lowest-lying nation on Earth, is at risk of disappearing from the world map, scientists say.

Obama: 'I won't go' for climate action that hurts jobs, growth

The threat 'today'
But efforts taken so far to rein in emissions, reduce deforestation and promote clean technology are not getting the job done. A recent projection by the World Bank showed temperatures are expected to increase by up to 7.2 F by 2100.

"Climate change is no longer some distant threat for the future, but is with us today," said Greenpeace climate campaigner Martin Kaiser, who was also at the Doha talks. "At the end of a year that has seen the impacts of climate change devastate homes and families around the world, the need for action is obvious and urgent."

Dangerous warming effects could include flooding of coastal cities and island nations, disruptions to agriculture and drinking water, the spread of diseases and the extinction of species.

Many scientists also say that extreme weather events, such as Hurricane Sandy's onslaught on the U.S. East Coast, will become more frequent as the Earth warms, although it is impossible to attribute any individual event to climate change.

The Kyoto Protocol, adopted in 1997, is the most important climate agreement reached in the U.N. process so far. It expires this year, so negotiators in Doha will try to extend it as a stopgap measure until a wider deal can be reached.

Ex-climate change skeptic: Humans cause global warming

For thousands of years, permafrost has trapped Siberia's carbon-rich soil, a compost of Ice Age plant and animal remains. But global warming is melting the permafrost and exposing the soil, causing highly flammable methane to seep out. NBC's Jim Maceda reports.

Divisions
The problem is that only the European Union and a handful of other countries -- that together are behind less than 15 percent of global emissions -- are willing to put down emissions targets for a second commitment period of Kyoto.

The United States rejected Kyoto because it did not impose any binding commitments on major developing countries such as India and China, which is now the world's No. 1 carbon emitter.

Climate-changing methane 'rapidly destabilizing' off East Coast, study finds

The United States and other Western countries insist that the firewall in the climate talks between developing and developed countries must be removed so that the new treaty can apply to all nations.

China and other developing countries want to maintain a clear division, saying climate change is mainly a legacy of Western industrialization and that their own emissions must be allowed to grow as their economies expand, lifting millions of people out of poverty.

The Inuit, who survived for centuries by hunting seals and whales, are watching their way of life disappear.

Complete Environment coverage on NBCNews.com

That discord scuttled attempts to forge a climate deal in Copenhagen in 2009 and risks a relapse in Doha as talks begin on a new global deal that is supposed to be adopted in 2015 and implemented in 2020.

The rich-poor divide is also deepened by arguments over climate aid meant to help developing countries convert to cleaner energy sources and adapt their infrastructure to rising sea levels and other effects of global warming.

Quick Post - Proxiblog's Top Online Coin Auctions

It?s only our opinion, as we hope to help auctioneers by sharing our numismatic knowledge. In that light, here are 10 tips that we hope will increase your bottom line if you are an auctioneer scheduling regular coin sessions on Proxibid.

  1. Treat your good consignors with special partnerships or rates because they send you quality coins.
  2. Fire your bad consignors who send problem coins that sell to dissatisfied customers.
  3. Know numismatics. If you deal in coins monthly or more frequently on Proxibid, you?re not only an auctioneer; you?re a coin dealer. Learn the trade.
  4. Become an expert grader by reading Proxiblog, Coin Values, Coin World, Coin Update News or by studying PCGS Photograde.
  5. Subscribe to CoinFacts so you can keep track of latest auction prices for specific coins.
  6. Advertise to purchase coins in your locality. Buy 10% below greysheet as many dealers do. Start with $5000.
  7. Compete with those dealers. As more dealers sign up on Proxibid?a sign of the times, as coin buying is at its peak on Internet?dealers will have the advantage because they advertise for coins, have walk-ins and go to estate auctions. Do the same, or they may win the game by offering 0% buyers and/or seller fees.
  8. Offer consignment contracts that charge 8-10% for lots that sell under $250 and 0% for coins that sell above that level. This will help you secure top consignments.
  9. Discourage reserves. In your contract, charge 5-10% for any coin with a high reserve that fails to sell. High reserves or opening bids discourage competition and waste bidders and your time.
  10. Charge for onsite sales at your auctions. You have physical set-up fees. Rent. Overhead. Otherwise you?re using the Internet crowd to bid up on the onsite crowd. Soon enough, Proxibidders will go elsewhere.

We want to see auctioneers succeed as much as bidders. We dislike bad consignments with problem coins, self-slabbed hype, and bad photography, shipping and customer service.

We support Proxibid. Yes, it charges fees; but you get the world with that on Internet where the coin business is. APN clearance or PayPal is essential if you hope to sell online.

Houses that change with the times will continue to have the advantage. And consignors with the best coins will go to those with the best contracts.

The auction business is about continuous innovation, competition and excitement.

If you have personal recommendations to enhance the bidding or selling experience on Proxibid, post a comment below.

Flood-risk homes could be stripped of insurance | The Times

Hundreds of thousands of householders in areas at high risk of flooding face losing their home-insurance policies next year unless the Government finds extra cash to rescue the industry.

Talks between insurance chiefs and ministers, which have lasted for months, are on ?the brink of collapse?, The Times has learnt. The impasse came as hundreds of homes in the Midlands and the South West were deluged by floods.

The Environment Agency issued 221 flood warnings and 267 flood alerts yesterday, with river levels still rising in some parts of the West Country. More than 800 properties have been flooded since

Scientists rush to save iconic manta rays

By Rebecca Pilkington-Vincett

A feeding station popular with manta rays is not far from the Misool Eco Resort and Conservation Center in Raja Ampat, eastern Indonesia.

By Adrienne Mong, NBC News

RAJA AMPAT, Indonesia ?They?ve been described by one scientist as ?pandas of the ocean.?

?They?re such an iconic species, beloved by divers,? said Andrea Marshall, director of the?Marine Megafauna Foundation, who came up with the description during an interview with NBC News. ?They?re just amazing.??

Unlikely as it might seem, the panda and the manta ray have a lot in common.

Just as scientists still haven?t been able to confirm the number of pandas in the wild, they also have no idea how many manta rays exist.

?Globally we don?t know how many manta rays there are,? said Guy Stevens, director of the U.K.-based?Manta Trust,?whose research is largely based around manta populations in the Maldives.

But -- again, like the panda -- scientists think it?s a small population.

?If they?re lucky, (manta rays) have two pups (over several years).?That?s a very low reproductive rate, especially compared to your average fish,? said Dr. Heidi Dewar, a biologist at the?Southwest Fisheries Science Center, part of NOAA.

Anecdotal evidence suggests mantas are under threat, and China may be a major reason for it.

Manta rays are vulnerable on two fronts: as bycatch ? getting caught in industrial fishing nets targeting different types of tuna ? and, increasingly, because of traditional Chinese medicine, or TCM.?

Manta rays are abundant in the waters around Raja Ampat, eastern Indonesia.

Manta rays are harvested for their gill rakers, which allow the fish to filter food from water.? Some Chinese believe they have healing properties or are good at cleaning out toxins. One Chinese-language?website claims gill rakers enhance the immune system, promote blood circulation and aid in the treatment of cancer, skin disease and infertility.

?It?s just cartilage,? said Dewar, echoing skepticism expressed by many scientists.

Medicinal fad?
Conservationists say manta rays aren?t even considered ?traditional? medicine and argue no reference to the animal can be found in TCM books dating back a century. But with rising incomes that enable Chinese consumers to readily adopt medicinal fads, the impact on manta rays has accelerated over the past 10 to 15 years.?

?A lot of it is completely unrecorded,? said Stevens, who worked on a project founded by Shark Savers and WildAid to document the scope of gill-raker harvesting.?

Understanding the beauty and diversity of Raja Ampat, aka 'Underwater Eden'

Researchers looked at the location, value and species involved. ?It does seem the majority of all of those gills that are being traded are ending up in China,? Stevens said.

The conclusion, published in a report called?Manta Ray of Hope, found that roughly 3,400 manta rays and 94,000 mobulas?(related to the manta ray family) are caught each year, but the numbers reflect only reported catches. ?Unreported and subsistence fisheries will mean true landings are much higher,? the report said.?

On patrol with a shark ranger in Indonesia's marine treasure trove

Visits to random TCM shops in Beijing and Shanghai turned up no gill rakers. In fact, a veteran pharmacist at Tongrentang, a long-established purveyor of traditional Chinese and herbal medicines, said she had never heard of manta rays being used this way.

But the Manta Ray of Hope report estimates a mature ocean manta could yield up to 15 pounds of dried gills that can bring in as much as $230 a pound in a market in China.?

Australia moves to ban fishing trawler with 900-foot-long net

Marshall said she has noticed an uptick in manta fishing. ?I?ve been (in Mozambique) in the last decade ? and we?ve seen an 87 percent decline in the population because of the fishing.??

Unlike many shippers, Chinese merchants who transport cheap products from the mainland for export to Africa ?want to fill [their unloaded cargo vessels] with resources wherever they go.? In Africa, they fill it up with wood, fish or shark?s fin,? she said.??They?ll go out to the local fisheries along the coastline and scout for these products.??

The scientist has spoken to members of local communities, who say the Chinese offer ?new nets, new lines, new hooks.?(The Chinese traders) say to them, ?If you get the sharks or the mantas or the turtles, you get all the meat. You can keep all the meat. You just sell us the things you don?t normally eat.'??

Protecting a ?threatened? species
Mantas were listed last year as ?threatened? under the international Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species.

The?International Union for the Conservation of Nature?has classified the manta ray as ?vulnerable? to extinction.?

PhotoBlog: Raja Ampat archipelago: The world's last paradise

Chinese scientists have also weighed in.?

?In the last two years, we have conducted evaluations of the manta ray and submitted a recommendation to the government to list it as a protected species,? said Professor Wang Yanmin from Shandong University?s Marine College.

?There is no regulation for protecting the manta ray so sales of mantas are not illegal,? said Feng Yongfeng, founder of Green Beagle, a group that promotes environmental protection.

Groups like Manta Trust are focusing on getting manta rays listed by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). But scientists have their work cut out for them.?

?It?s very difficult to get listed on CITES.? They ask for a lot of detail that is difficult to pin down,? said Marshall. ??Maybe in the terrestrial world, biologists can provide those kinds of details. ?When you?re talking about the megafauna [or large marine species] world, it?s very difficult.??

Marshall ? who discovered a second type of manta ray in 2008 and is in the process of identifying a third -- acknowledges little is known about them.

AFP - Getty Images file

A huge manta ray weighing more than 2,200 pounds and measuring nearly 9 yards in length was caught off the eastern coast of China this past September.

Manta births a mystery?
Vexing questions include the manta?s life span, details of their reproductive ecology and migratory patterns.?

?I could wrap my life up in 20 minutes if I could talk to them,? she joked. ??It has been driving me insane for the last ten years because I haven?t been able to figure out where they give birth.? It?s 2012 and nobody has ever seen a manta give birth in the wild.??

And research is painstaking. For one, concentrations of the animal tend to be around far-flung islands.?Stevens of Manta Trust cited the costs of tracking mantas and the difficulty in locating and knowing how to study them.?

With technological improvements, however, scientists are gaining some ground. Satellite tags are one way to help the research.??What do they do when we can?t observe them? I?d love to follow an animal to find out how they spend their time,? said Stevens. ?The tagging gives you small glimpses of them.??

Two dive instructors at the Misool Eco Resort and Conservation Center in Raja Ampat have uncovered a revenue stream to offset research costs: tourism.

?One manta ray can raise $1 million (U.S. dollars) in tourism income over its lifetime,? said Rebecca Pilkington-Vincett, citing a figure contained in the Manta Ray of Hope?report.

PhotoBlog: Raja Ampat archipelago: The world's last paradise

With the blessing of the resort, Pilkington-Vincett and Calvin Beale launched a research project off the surrounding reefs. ?

Last season, the duo raised $32,000 from donations by recreational divers who accompanied them on dives to gather DNA samples and tag the mantas.?

With the money, they have bought three satellite tags and collected numerous DNA samples.? They are sending off the data to the Scripps Institution of Oceanography for analysis by a graduate student.?

With online databases such as the?Manta Research Project, where some of Pilkington-Vincett and Beale?s data are logged, or the?Manta Matcher, developed by Marshall and operating much ?like the FBI fingerprint online database,? research on the manta ray has become rooted in a global exchange among scientists and amateurs alike.?

Until its secrets are fully revealed, the manta?s mystique seems guaranteed.?

?I think it?s fascinating,? said Dewar of the Southwest Fisheries Science Center, ?that there is such a large and amazing creature that has so many mysteries attached to it.??

Additional research by Le Li, Johanna Armstrong and Yanzhou Liu.

(AP) ? A phone book company has settled a lawsuit over its placement of a Montana restaurant in the "Animal Carcass Removal" section of its yellow pages, a listing the restaurant owner says cost him customers and made him the butt of a Jay Leno joke.

The terms of the Nov. 16 deal between Dex Media Inc. and Big Sky Beverage Inc., the parent company of Bar 3 Bar-B-Q, were not disclosed. A tentative agreement proposed in September said a deal would include a payment to the restaurant owner.

Restaurant owner Hunter Lacey sued Dex after the listing appeared in the 2009 phone book and was reprinted in other print and online directories in 2010 and last year. It gained national notoriety after Leno featured it as a joke on the Tonight Show in January 2011.

Lacey's lawsuit claims a Dex salesman deliberately published the free listing under the "Animal Carcass Removal" section after he refused to buy an advertisement in the phone book. The salesman no longer works for the company.

Lacey claimed the negative publicity caused business to drop off at his Bozeman and Belgrade restaurants and his brand's reputation to suffer. His lawsuit alleged negligence, defamation and slander, among other charges.

Dex has said it was an erroneous listing the company removed from its online directory when it was discovered.

The case seemed to be headed for court after it was filed in U.S. District Court in September 2011. But settlement talks began in earnest after U.S. Magistrate Judge Keith Strong denied a request to dismiss the case because of problems he saw with Dex's disclosure of company documents to Big Sky Beverage's attorney.

Strong took issue with the timing of Dex's release of audio recordings of the salesman's calls to Bar 3 Bar-B-Q and a company document without giving the other side adequate time to inspect them in preparation for questioning the salesman.

Attorneys for both sides told the judge less than two months later they had reached a tentative settlement, which was finalized this month.

Neither Lacey nor attorneys for Dex and Big Sky Beverage returned calls and emails seeking comment this week.

New insights into virus proteome: Unknown proteins of the herpesvirus discovered

ScienceDaily (Nov. 23, 2012) ? The genome encodes the complete information needed by an organism, including that required for protein production. Viruses, which are up to a thousand times smaller than human cells, have considerably smaller genomes. Using a type of herpesvirus as a model system, the scientists of the Max Planck Institute (MPI) of Biochemistry in Martinsried near Munich and their collaboration partners at the University of California in San Francisco have shown that the genome of this virus contains much more information than previously assumed.

The researchers identified several hundred novel proteins, many of which were surprisingly small. The results of the study have now been published in Science.

More than 80 percent of the world's population is infected with the herpesvirus, which can cause severe diseases in newborns and in persons with weakened immune system. Researchers had already sequenced the herpesvirus genome 20 years ago, thinking they could then predict all proteins that the virus produces (virus proteome). Now scientists from the research department of Matthias Mann, director at the MPI of Biochemistry, and their American colleagues have analyzed the information content of the genome more precisely.

Small but highly complex

To carry out their study, the scientists infected cells with herpesvirus and observed which proteins the virus produced inside the cell over a period of 72 hours. In order for proteins to be produced at all, the cell machinery must first make copies of the genetic material as intermediate products (RNA). While investigating the intermediate products of the herpesvirus, the American collaborators discovered many novel RNA molecules which were in large part surprisingly short.

They also found that the organization of information required for protein production in the virus genome was far more complex than previously assumed. Annette Michalski, a scientist in the Department of Proteomics and Signal Transduction at the MPI of Biochemistry, was subsequently able to confirm directly the predicted viral proteins in the infected cell using mass spectrometry. This method enables an overview of the complete proteome of the virus-infected cell.

The results of the American and German researchers provide detailed insight into the complex mechanisms used by the virus. "We showed that it's not enough merely to know the virus genome to understand the biology of the herpesvirus," Annette Michalski said. "What is important is to look at the products actually produced from the genome." Even human genes may be much more complex than the genome sequence itself indicates, commented the researchers. Matthias Mann and his colleagues plan to investigate this question further in the coming years.

General Electric Purchases 2,000 Ford C-Max ... - Automotive Blogs

Outside of being one of the world?s great giant conglomerates, General Electric is committed to finding smart energy solutions for the world?s growing demands and more stringent emissions laws. It?s a company that prides itself on doing things efficiently. So when the company decides to purchase 2,000 Ford C-Max Energi plug-in hybrids, you know it?s going to make a splash.

General Electric wants to have an all-green fleet of vehicles in the coming years. So far, it has purchased Chevrolet Volts and other hybrids, and the 2013 C-Max Energi will bring its plug-in fleet up to 5,000 cars total. Besides providing associates with transportation, General Electric hopes to use the plug-in vehicles to research how they will affect strain on the U.S.?s electric grid in hopes of refining how energy is used. They?ll also be looking at ways to add to the more than 10,000 public charging stations in the U.S. to improve upon them. Both Ford and General Electric will be seeking help from Georgia Tech to see how to better use Ford?s MyFord Mobile smartphone app to get cars to charge at off-peak times in addition to figuring out better means of dispensing alternative fuels such as electricity and compressed natural gas that may not be as widespread yet.

?Through access to vehicle data, we can accelerate research and development of new technologies to further improve efficiency, driver satisfaction and environmental benefits,? says Georgia Tech?s Professor Bert Bras of the university?s?Sustainable Design and Manufacturing lab.

With 195 horsepower of motivation, a 108-mpg equivalent fuel economy in the city, and an average of 43 mpg in mixed driving overall when used as a hybrid, and loads of room, we were impressed by the Ford C-Max Energi when we recently had a chance to drive it. And with wider adoption from the likes of one of the world?s largest electric and research companies, we imagine it will only get better through the upcoming years as Ford, General Electric, and Georgia Tech work together to make the car and its technologies even more seamless.

Why Mumbai is so gripped by the status of right-wing Bal Thackeray

Mumbaikars closely followed news that one of their city's most controversial political leaders may be critically ill, resurfacing questions about succession.?

Reports that controversial right-wing leader Bal Thackeray was critically ill put Mumbai on tense hold for much of Thursday while raising questions about the future of his party, the Shiv Sena, which controls the city government and is an important member of India?s opposition group, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance.

Parts of Mumbai reportedly shut down Thursday in anticipation of trouble from Sainiks, as the members of his party are known, gathered in large numbers near the residence of the Thackerays. By evening, the 86-year-old?s condition was reported to be stable and a parade of the city?s powerful and famous was visiting the leader?s home amid tight security.?

Thackeray's declining health is putting the spotlight on the fragile state of his party,?which has been riddled by succession struggles for more than a decade and has seemed unable to move beyond its founder?s polarizing identity politics.?

In the four decades of its existence, the Shiv Sena has targeted ??sometimes violently???south Indian migrants to the city, Muslims, so-called symbols of?Western culture like Valentine?s Day, and more recently, north Indian migrants. Earlier this month, Mr. Thackeray reiterated his opposition to cricket matches between the Indian and Pakistani teams in a front-page editorial in the party newspaper,?Saamna, asking party activists to stop such matches from being held in the country.

Shiva's Army

A political cartoonist known for his barbed rhetoric, Mr. Thackeray formed the Shiv Sena (Shiva?s Army) in the 1960s in the wake of the successful movement for the formation of the state of Maharashtra with Mumbai as its capital. Not unlike Tammany Hall in New York, the Sena promoted the interests of local Maharashtrians or ?sons of the soil? against the influx of migrant workers to Mumbai, historically India?s most cosmopolitan city and its commercial headquarters, through a network of street cadres.

The Sena?s power grew in the 1970s and 1980s, at the expense of the Communists. Thackeray?s invocation of a proud, native identity especially through the historical figure of Shivaji, a 17th century Hindu Maratha warrior who fought the Muslim Mughals and established a Hindu kingdom, found resonance with disaffected young men at a time of declining industrial jobs. During the ?80s and ?90s, the party members? rough-and-ready tactics gave Thackeray the power to shut down the city.

Co. looks for worker after oil rig fire in Gulf

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? The owner of an oil rig that caught fire following an explosion in the Gulf of Mexico last week says it has expanded its search for a missing worker.

Black Elk Energy says three dive boats are now working, and Plaquemines Parish sheriff's deputies are checking beaches.

In a statement emailed Sunday evening, the company said that all helicopter companies flying in the area have also been asked to keep an eye out, and that a search-and-rescue dog will be brought to the platform Monday.

Searchers recovered the body of a second missing worker on Saturday.

Doctors said Sunday that the condition of one of four men burned in the fire has improved to fair. Two remain in critical condition and one in serious condition.

Apple Is Approaching Oversold | Stocks | Minyanville's Wall Street

MINYANVILLE ORIGINAL This morning we finally got an Approaching Oversold reading for Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) at $525. Now let me stress the fact that our countertrend has three levels: 1 - Approaching Oversold,? 2 - Oversold, and 3 - Extremely Oversold.? Year to date, I have only seen one stock at Extremely Oversold levels and that was Advanced Micro Devices (NYSE:AMD). Can we get to an Oversold level? Yes, but we think this is now (at $525) a high probability trade off of this level. Short-term traders: Use a tight stop off the $518 level. Investors: Only start with ? positions and never allocate more than 5% of your total investment account to one position.

Below, we have added an example of one stock that hit an Approaching Oversold level -- Chipotle Mexican Grill (NYSE:CMG) -- and about 4% lower than that, it hit an Oversold level. So please keep in mind that Apple is not Oversold; it is only Approaching Oversold. This can be used for investors looking to scale in at $518.

Lawmakers shown video of Benghazi attack

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Lawmakers have seen a video made drone surveillance and security camera video that showed them in real time the attack in Libya that killed four Americans, including the ambassador.

Top intelligence officials showed them the footage as part of hearings on the attack in September on the diplomatic mission in Benghazi.

Senate intelligence Committee Chairman Dianne Feinstein and ranking member Saxby Chambliss say they will hold at least two more fact-finding hearings before a public session to share what they've learned.

Neither would say if they are satisfied with explanations of why the intelligence analysis changed, from reports that a demonstration turned violent, to blaming the attack on terrorists alone.

The senators say they hope to hear more details when ex-CIA Director David Petraeus testifies behind closed doors Friday.

Berlin startup scene gets nod from Google

BERLIN (AP) ? Berlin's budding Internet entrepreneurs received the closest thing to an industry endorsement Tuesday, with a ?1 million ($1.3 million) investment from Google Inc. for a new 'hub' where startups can work, play and meet investors.

While the investment is unlikely to provide a material boost to Berlin's tech sector, it's a sign that a city which has so far been a secret tip for geeks hoping to develop the next big web hit is now on the radar of the industry's biggest players.

The German capital has for years been attracting a growing number of creative, young entrepreneurs thanks to its cheap rents and hip party scene. But the city has lagged behind rivals such as San Francisco and London, home to photo-sharing app Instagram and music streaming service Last.fm, when it comes to big-name launches.

Startups based in Berlin sold for a total ?500 million in 2010 and 2011, compared with ?8 billion for London during the same period.

"We're just at the beginning," said Simon Schaefer of investment firm JMES, which is partnering with Google to provide the new facilities located close to where the Berlin Wall used to divide the city during the Cold War.

One of those who will be taking up residence there is Benedikt Bingler, who is developing a wish list website called 'toast.'

The 29-year-old from the southern German city of Karlsruhe said one of the reasons he and his five collaborators picked Berlin was the low cost of living ? a key factor for young entrepreneurs still waiting to break even. Berlin is about a 25 percent cheaper than other major European capitals, thanks mainly to lower rent prices.

For Dario Galbiati, another prospective tenant, moving to Berlin from his native Italy was an obvious choice to work on a new shopping portal called 'W views.'

"People in Berlin know the Internet scene but it's also a cool city so you can attract talent. This gives you all you need for a successful startup," he said.

Doing the same thing back home would have been unthinkable, said the 23-year-old. "Italy is so far behind, it's insane."

Still, Germany is by no means at the forefront of online entrepreneurship. The country's Internet economy generated a turnover of just over ?75 billion last year, according to the Mannheim-based Center for European Economic Research. This amounts to about 2.9 percent of Germany's GDP ? far behind the 4.7 percent share that the Internet contributed to the United States economy in 2010, according to Boston Consulting Group.

But the growing international interest in Berlin's digital entrepreneurs has experts rejoicing.

"Google's investment in the startup scene here is a clear signal," said lawyer Andre Egger, who specializes in financing for technology and entertainment companies.

Egger noted that the city, whose unofficial motto is "poor, but sexy," gained a bad reputation for copying ideas some years ago. Its biggest homegrown startup is Rocket Internet, a company that has found success imitating the concepts of existing websites and now boasts 15,000 employees worldwide.

"Berlin used to copy, now it has its own culture and structures," said Egger. Last year alone the city registered 500 Internet startups and those that attract investors can now expect to receive between ?2 million and ?3 million in initial funding, he said.

A Berlin startup that has already made a name for itself is 'Wunderlist,' a task-management tool that regularly ranks among the 100 top productivity apps on iTunes.

6Wunderkinder, the app's maker, is also moving into the new hub, which will include open space offices, restaurants, a gym and a concert venue.

"If we want to be like Silicon Valley in a few years we need investors like Google and spaces like this," said the company's chief marketing officer, 28-year-old Benedikt Lehnert.

Google doesn't plan to use the new site to poach ideas or successful startups, said Max Senges of Google's German policy team.

But the investment ? a minute fraction of the $2.18 billion Google earned in the third quarter ? could pay off for the company in other ways.

The search giant has been at odds with the German government and the country's publishers over the so-called 'Google Tax,' a proposed levy on the use of web content. Google has also found Germany one of the trickiest markets for privacy regulation.

"It's not part of effort to improve our image in Germany," Senges said. "But we hope that the sum and the substance of what we do will convince people that we are not evil."

5-inch 1080p, 440ppi Android phones coming to the U.S., blowing past iPhone 5 Retina display

HTC is showing off the Verizon Droid DNA today at the special event in New York City, and the big news -- the HUGE news -- is the size and density of their display: a 5-inch fully 1920x1080p at a positively pornographic 440ppi. HTC has always loved pushing the envelop when it comes to specs, and this is obviously no exception. Back when Apple launched the iPhone 4 with Retina display, its 960x640 at 326ppi screen was well beyond anything else on the market, and it stayed that way for a long time. Even with the iPhone 5's 1136x640, still 326ppi screen, HTC is now far, far ahead.

If Apple wants to once again take the screen density crown, and keep app compatibility the same way they did when they went to @2x pixel-doubled Retina, they'd have to switch to @4X pixel-quadrupled super-Retina. That'd be 2272x1280, and unless they increase the physical size of the display, an even more ludicrous 652ppi.

Powering a display that big for any length of time is non trivial as well. The iPad 4's 2048x1536, 264 ppi Retina display required an increase in thickness and weight and a battery that wouldn't be out of place on a laptop. The iPad mini couldn't be made with Retina display.

Here's what those displays do and would look like, both in terms of pixel count and density and physical scale (44x44 pixel grid overlay). From left to right, iPhone 5 (purple), Droid DNA (green), iPad 4 (blue), theoretical iPhone @4x (red).

HTC is using a 2020 mAH battery to power the 141 x 70.5 x 9.73 mm, 138 grams Droid DNA. Apple, by contrast, is using a 1440 mAH battery, for 123.8 mm x 58.6 mm x 7.6 mm, 112 gram iPhone 5. However, the Droid DNA is using the same processor as the Nexus 4, a 1.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 APQ8064 and MDM9615m, despite pushing 1920x1080 rather than 1280x768. It'll be interesting to see what that does for performance, since Apple's Retina devices always seem to take a performance hit for the first generation, and that's usually with all new (Apple A4) or beefed up (Apple A5X) processors.

Apple's priorities seem to be on making thinner, lighter, better devices, not bigger or denser ones, so this might well be a battle Apple is happy to sit out. Arguably, any increase in density beyond 300 ppi is lost on most human eyes anyway. Just like cameras, where better sensors are a smarter play than more megapixels, we might be hitting diminishing returns when it comes to displays.

Still, for people who want the biggest, densest phone screens possible, with the HTC Droid DNA on Verizon, there's a new monolith in town.

Mobile Nations' Phil Nickinson was at the Verizon event today, make sure you check out his full HTC Droid DNA hands-on.
