Apple spits out Android option from Chomp app navigator

Apple drops Android search option from Chomp

It's taken a bit longer than we expected, but following Apple's acquisition of app search engine Chomp, the Android option has now been cut out from its homepage. We're now left with the choice between iPhone and iPad categories, alongside existing shortcuts for popular freebies and apps on sale, in a few efforts to cut through Cupertino's 600,000-strong app selection. Hit up the source to give it a run for yourself.

Basketball Wives Producers to Sue Jennifer Williams?

The producers of VH1's Basketball Wives are considering filing a lawsuit against cast member Jennifer Williams for publicly trashing the reality show.

After Jennifer Williams sued Nia Crooks for slapping her in the face while taping an episode (below), VH1 reportedly became absolutely livid with her.

Now producers are ready rebut Williams' legal and media rampage, during which she said the show portrays African-American women negatively.

Producers feel Williams' lawsuit is frivolous - her contract says she waives such a right to sue based on physical confrontations, the network says.

Moreover, her explicit show-bashing is in violation of her contract, which forbids cast members from doing media appearances or press without approval.

Or speaking negatively about the show, which the nut job clearly has.

VH1 feels J-Dubs is "ruining the brand" they worked so hard to build, which is hilarious, but actually not a legal stretch if she's in breach of contract.

Crooks, for her part, was charged with battery for the slap. Really.

Demi Lovato: Attacked On Stage in Paraguay!

An attempt at a kind gesture turned very scary for Demi Lovato in Paraguay last night, as the singer was forced to leave the stage and put a halt to her concert when fans leaped up and tried to embrace her.

The 19-year old initially tried to give fans a better seat, only for attendees to get carried away and actually jump on stage. Security intervened. Demi walked away. Order was restored and she eventually returned to finish the set.

But it's easy to imagine just how frightening it can be to see an influx of hyper strangers heading your way. Watch it all unfold now:

Earlier today, a series of Demi Lovato tour dates around the U.S. were unveiled. Click on the preceding link and find out when she'll be singing at a locale near you!

It's always the same. Just when I'm thinking that I couldn't be surprised by the Hubble Space Telescope anymore, it captures another image that leaves me in awe. Increasing Support of Breastfeeding Mothers | Baby care | Health ...

Earlier this year, researchers in Scotland examined the disjunction between the idealism of exclusive breastfeeding and the reality that many families experience. The World Health Organization recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of life for all babies. Other organizations, such as the American Academy of Pediatrics, recommend that all babies consume breast milk for the first 12 months of life for maximum developmental and immune benefits. According to the Scottish study, most women find these goals unrealistic, despite the known long-term benefits of breastfeeding for both mom and baby.

Breastfeeding can reduce the incidence of diabetes, asthma, obesity, ear infections, upper respiratory infections, and SIDS. In fact, the World Health Organization has been quoted to call colostrum-the breast milk that a mother makes in the first few days after a baby is born-?baby?s first immunization? because of the immunological benefits that it confers to newborns. According to the authors of Breastfeeding Made Simple: Seven Natural Laws for Nursing Mothers, ?exclusive breastfeeding for six months by 90% of U.S. mothers could prevent 911 infant deaths and save the U.S. healthcare system US$13 billion.? Research has also shown that babies who have been breastfed excel in speech and language development and have higher IQ levels. Breastfeeding also provides myriad health benefits for mothers as well-there is a significantly lower incidence of aggressive breast cancer, osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, ovarian cancer, and diabetes in women who have breastfed.

If a mother and her infant have so much to gain from breastfeeding, why are exclusive breastfeeding rates at 6 months postpartum only at 15% in the U.S., according to the CDC? Despite much promotion of the benefits and joys of breastfeeding, these low rates are likely due to a lack of support within in the infrastructure of the health care system and in our communities at large. In fact, the mothers interviewed in the Scottish study said that the lack of support from healthcare providers, family members and friends contributed to their decision to stop breastfeeding before their baby was 6 months old.

The unfortunate reality is, not all healthcare professionals fully support breastfeeding and what?s more-not all healthcare professionals are knowledgeable or skilled in providing breastfeeding support and counseling during nursing challenges. Many women receive some education in breastfeeding prenatally say, during a childbirth education class, but then get very little continued counseling during the postpartum. Furthermore, the women in the study are right when they said that many healthcare providers paint a rosy picture of breastfeeding, choosing only to speak of the beautiful bonding experience that the mother-baby nursing dyad has during breastfeeding or the long term health benefits. Too few of us actually talk about the common challenges and pitfalls that a woman may face while establishing breastfeeding out of fear of discouraging new mothers from getting started. In the end, however, the women who are challenged by getting a good latch, sore nipples, pumping at work, or getting chided in public while nursing often feel blindsided by these challenges or feel guilty about not achieving the ?ideal picture? of a breastfeeding mother. These are but a few of the challenges that breastfeeding mothers may face.

To say that many women are not getting the support that they need from their communities to continue exclusive breastfeeding until 6 months postpartum would be an understatement. While some companies support breastfeeding by having on-site lactation consultants, clean places for expressing breast milk, and on-site day care centers, many employers still do not have good systems in place to support a mother who needs to express her milk every few hours to maintain her milk supply for her growing baby. Despite the fact that many states have laws that protect a woman?s right to express milk in a clean place other than a bathroom-for up to 3 years after the birth of their baby-some women are asked to pump in the tiny stall of the company bathroom. Others struggle to get the break time that they need to express milk every few hours to prevent engorgement which can lead to a breast infection.

Breastfeeding mothers have been escorted off of airplanes, asked to leave restaurants and courtrooms, and shuffled into dressing rooms of major department stores while breastfeeding their infant. The reasons cited? Some members of the public find breastfeeding lewd, offensive or inappropriate. In Maine, the law states ?a mother has the right to breastfeed in any location, whether public or private, as long as she is otherwise authorized to be in that location.? Raised public awareness of the rights of nursing mothers is greatly needed to encourage mothers to continue breastfeeding and maximize the health benefits for her and her baby.

So where do we go from here? First we need to change the cultural attitudes around breastfeeding in the U.S. Breastfeeding our babies is the way that nature intended for us to nourish and nurture our offspring. There are often a number of key moments in the first 6 months of a baby?s life where mothers are faced with the decision to persevere through the nursing challenges or to switch to formula or exclusively feeding solid foods. However, more support from knowledgeable, skilled healthcare providers who utilize a non-judgmental approach to counseling that extends beyond the first 6 weeks postpartum is paramount during these critical times. Let?s be open and honest about the realities of breastfeeding-which can be hard and frustrating at times and beautifully transcendent at other time. By supporting one another, we can chip away at the goal of exclusively breastfeeding for the first 6 months of life day by day, one feeding at a time.

Cassidian Communications Announces Expansion of P25 Land ...

Cassidian Communications, an EADS company, today announced that it has received a contract amendment to expand its existing digital, trunked P25 Land Mobile Radio (LMR) network for public safety communications with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in the province of Ontario, Canada.

The existing CORP25 system, which was the first installation in the RCMP?s new Central Region Operation Communication System, was initially deployed in 2010 across a 360-kilometer corridor to successfully support the G8 and G20 Summits in Ontario, Canada. This next phase of the planned roll-out provides full coverage for RCMP members engaged in security, protection and law enforcement in the ?O? Division.

The CORP25 system is the industry?s only true non-proprietary P25 solution. One hundred percent standards-compliant, the interoperable CORP25 solution supports multi-vendor deployments?a requirement of the RCMP at the onset of the project. Multi-vendor systems allow a customer to combine the CORP25 infrastructure with best-in-class radios, consoles and other vendor components to deploy a world-class solution that meets the needs of its users at the lowest cost of ownership.

?We are pleased to be awarded this expansion contract with the RCMP,? said Francois Begaud, chief operating officer for the Cassidian Communications land mobile radio business. ?It is a further testament to our experience and expertise in digital, trunked LMR technology. We will continue to provide flexible, non-proprietary radio solutions that enable competitive procurements and offer the highest quality at the best price.?

'Dark Knight Rises' Third Trailer To Premiere With 'Avengers'

'Knight' will also have the most IMAX footage of any Hollywood movie.

Marvel and DC Comics fans are in for quite a treat. Not only will "Marvel's The Avengers" finally release in theaters on May 4, but it was confirmed over the weekend that DC Comics' "The Dark Knight Rises" third trailer will debut when Earth's mightiest heroes ban together.

A Warner Bros. executive told Deadline Hollywood, "We see this placement as a good strategic decision. We always want our trailers to be seen with films that people want to see — and a lot of people will be going to 'The Avengers'!"

Warner Bros.' idea of placing a DC Comics trailer in front of a Marvel film isn't new. In 2008, a third trailer for "The Dark Knight" played before "Iron Man." It would seem a little strange since Marvel and DC are rivals, but it's all a marketing strategy. "It will provide the best potential exposure for 'The Dark Knight Rises,' " the studio exec said. "It's a big positive for everyone!"

We know comic fans are certainly not complaining. And that's not all they have to look forward to when it comes to Christopher Nolan's final Batman flick. The Wall Street Journal also reported that "The Dark Knight Rises" will contain the most IMAX footage ever featured in a Hollywood film. "The Dark Knight" had 40 minutes of IMAX footage when it released in 2008, but the 2012 follow-up will have more than an hour's worth. It may seem like IMAX is nothing to get excited over, with "The Avengers," "The Amazing Spider-Man" and "Prometheus" all slated to hit IMAX screens this summer as well. The difference is Nolan's film was shot with an actual IMAX camera, whereas the others are simply being converted by IMAX's technology.

The 90-pound, incredibly noisy IMAX camera has proved to be difficult for some directors, but it didn't faze Nolan. "There was a huge irony that we were told it would be too difficult to shoot a Hollywood movie on IMAX when we had this gigantic camera department, grips, electric, hundreds of people working for us," the director told WSJ. "These were cameras that had been to the top of Mount Everest, to the bottom of the ocean and into outer space, but people thought we couldn't make a feature film. It was absurd."

Audiences can see the third trailer for "The Dark Knight Rises" during the "Avengers" previews on May 4, before the Batman epic releases on July 18, 2012.

MBTA and Masabi team up for first smartphone rail ticketing system in the US, launching in Boston this fall

MBTA and Masabi team up for first smartphone rail ticketing system in the US, launching in Boston this fall

In Boston this fall, you won't need to keep up with your train ticket anymore -- as long as you don't leave your smartphone at home. The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) and Masabi have joined forces to bring a rail ticketing to handheld devices via iPhone, Android and BlackBerry apps. Headquartered in London, Masabi has launched similar tech for transit companies in the UK, eliminating ticket lines for many smartphone-wielding passengers. Software will allow riders to purchase tickets and passes that are validated with a barcode scan by conductors equipped with mobile devices of their own. MBTA is looking to cut costs and provide added convenience with the new system instead of adding more ticketing kiosks to its stations. The aforementioned apps will be developed alongside focus groups and a small pilot group this summer with a full rollout to all MBTA customers expected to happen this fall. Looking for a bit more info? Hit the coverage and source links below to read on.
