The backlash over Bayonetta 2 being exclusively released on the Wii U is both hilarious, and at the same time shameful. It?s bringing out the very worst in the gaming fandom. People are taking sides and the endless rage may never stop. However, in all of this, I want to dispel a common misconception among gamers who don?t play games on Nintendo consoles: We enjoy more than Mario and Zelda? folks. Many of us do like Call of Duty. We do like games like Skyrim, Borderlands, and yes? Bayonetta. The problem? Because of poor misconceptions we rarely got games like those on our platform this generation. It?s not our fault, but it?s reality. Several of us bought a 360 or PS3 specifically to get those experiences since we didn?t get them on the Wii.
Now, Nintendo is trying to bring those experiences to the Wii U. Is it unfair? Maybe. Is it justified? Most definitely. While one title isn?t going to make non-nintendo gamers want to finally make the plunge, it?s a start I feel of a message that will eventually sink in whether people admit it or not: It is indeed possible to have a console for everyone. Who knew? Nintendo will never advertise the Wii U as just this massive online multiplayer FPS crazed system. They will remind you, however, that you can get that on their console. In all the same glory as the competition. They will also remind you that you need to get off the couch and exercise with Wii Fit U. They will also remind you that Mario? Zelda? they still got it.
The Wii U isn?t going to be the most powerful system in the next generation. It may not have the gap the Wii had to the PS3, but it still wont be the beefiest of systems. However, when has gaming been about pixel counts and hardware? Hasn?t gaming always been about content? Smartphone games didn?t get popular because they are amazing - they got popular because they are fun and addictive, exactly what gaming is supposed to be. I?m not saying, of course, that games should be like the casual based smartphone games, but it?s a point that the entire existence of a video game is based on the premise of being entertaining.
I wont sit here and say the Wii U is going to be the best console on the planet this next generation. I may safely call it the best Nintendo console ever crafted, but that?s only because it brings the outside worlds ideals with online social networking, the entertainment box, and online gaming into a world filled with Nintendo glory. Nintendo being who they are, and also allowing every other studio to be who they are as well. It may never have the best of the best for graphical fidelity when the next generation hits, but it wont lack on content quality.
If people recall, this current generation was a blessing and a curse. In many ways, we got some of the best games ever crafted. At what cost? Many studios have shut down. The cost to develop a game is already numbering in the 20 million range, and much higher for certain games. Heck, some chime in at 100 million. Whats this next ?graphical leap? going to bring? Double the cost? Is that really an effective model? Outside of big studios like EA and Ubisoft - can the general game makers survive in a world like that?
The answer, of course, is no. Why have so many studios popped up for Smartphone games? Simple: They are cheap to make, easy to turn a profit, and you can still be relatively creative. While the Wii U is going to up production costs for Nintendo themselves into what we have now, it also means current game developers can still make games for todays cost, rather than tomorrows. It means, in essence, that Nintendo holds a major advantage in cost. You can get HD visuals, pretty good looking stuff, on a NIntendo platform and pay less to make the game for it. Or, you can make it for the PS4, pay twice as much, and get a pretty looking experience that, for half the costs, likely looks almost as good on someone elses platform.
Catch my drift? The point here in the end is that we Nintendo gamers like games that are not ?Nintendo Games?. We enjoy many experiences, and the people who claim otherwise are simply close minded. I play games on all three consoles. It?s not my fault through rampant fanboyism that they wont even attempt to try out Nintendo games. Unlike them, many of us, I?d argue most of the core Nintendo fan base, do play and enjoy games on other platforms. It?s just a shame so many on the other side of the fence think Nintendo is evil. Hey, Nintendo may be trying to bring serious content to it?s platform, but us Nintendo folk are sick of needing to do what you think you need to do now - purchase another console for the content you want.
It works both ways, and while I understand frustrations? Bayonetta 2 is coming exclusively to the Wii U. It?s now a Nintendo based franchise. Time to start letting that sink in. Nintendo is here to stay, and unlike the other two consoles, they actually make a profit. Maybe gamers should just get use to it? Nintendo makes money off of gaming. Microsoft and Sony post annual losses. That business model isn?t going to last much longer. Nintendo fanboys are just as bad as everyone else?s fanboys, but speaking from my own experience: We want great content too, and we don?t want to spend $600 on a new console to get it. Should it be cross platform (Bayonetta 2)? Go ahead and find a 3rd party studio willing to pay for it to be released on all 3 consoles. Go ahead. It?s expensive, and Nintendo can afford the bill.
